The messed up part isn't that they banned musical ringtones. Its that there are musical ringtones to be banned. The pervasiveness of western culture is shocking. Our toys (& material values) enter these places and destroy thousands of years of culture & tradition, decimating social structure and leaving a distraught populace vulnerable to thugs. Of course this has been going long before the U.S.'s dominance. We're just the best yet at it. There are few/no places or cultures remaining untouched. #somaliterroristsringtones
@Matt Mulvahill: Yeah, those thousands of years of culture and tradition in Somalia like forced female circumcision and beating women for speaking in public should be preserved. #somaliterroristsringtones
@Matt Mulvahill: Explain a modern Islamic society then, like Turkey. Fact is this Somali culture has not evolved, and is suffering from living in modern times with old traditions that do not account for that. Really simple but this is Giz and not worth going deeper here.
@Matt Mulvahill: Having musical ringtones doesn't mean their culture is being destroyed. It's evolving. If their traditions are being lost, it's because barbarians are terrorizing civilians in the name of religion, and telling people they cant dance at weddings. The U.S. isn't a part of this. #somaliterroristsringtones
@medopal: actually Australia is a 100% democracy. over 95% of their populace votes because each of their votes do actually count ^.^ #somaliterroristsringtones
@medopal: I'm thinking of moving to Somalia...what percentage of democracy do they practice? Also, do they have good park districts? #somaliterroristsringtones
@Jeb_Hoge: The fact that a group's culture is different isn't what garners or hinders my respect of it. It's the nature of the culture that does this. Oppressive cultures that take universal freedoms away from their governed populace are way off track. I cannot respect that. #somaliterroristsringtones
@a_pacetta: So I suppose being Al Qaeda's proxy means nothing at all, or the fact that the motherfuckers go around flogging people for listening to ringtones on their fucking cell phones. They clearly use excessive, brutal force and spread an immense amount of fear amongst their own people. If that's not a goddamn terrorist, I don't know what is. Get your head out of your ass. #somaliterroristsringtones
The US tried to help this country after it digressed into anarchy and warlord fiefdom...but time and time again we learn one thing - you cannot help a nation when the people won't help themselves.
You can liberate the Dutch, the Polish, and the French. Their people will fight back against the invader and will be ready to stand up and help when you drive out their invader/opresor. In fact, they will have a resistant movement before you even get there. In contrast, there is almost nothing you can do when the people of the host nation do nothing to help themselves...and, in fact, bow to the invader/opressor instead and aid them instead of helping your efforts to liberate them. A "resistance" movement in Somalia, Iraq, or Afghanistan akin to what was in France or Holland during WW2? Laughable. The citizens of these nations do nothing to take responsibility for their nation or their problems...and the liberator cannot do it all.
Some of you will start wailing about Bush or American oppression at this point, but history will find you to be sad people...like those on the left who railed against Roosevelt for getting involved in WW2...and stopped us from getting involved until Pearl Harbor...as Hitler rolled across Europe. The US has done more for the nations of the work in the last 100 years than any other nation has done in all of human history...and we have done all we are going to do for Somalia. They didn't help us when we placed our sons' and daughters' lives on the line to bring them food...and they applauded when our dead children were dragged through their streets. Fine. We are gone now...and this is what you get. Enjoy. There are consequences for actions...and failing to act.
Haha, I'm an ASCAP member, and I remember getting briefs about this in my email. I think it's totally absurd. Think of all the extra money rappers would get every time some pre pubescent tool drove down the street blasting his rhymes. It's not a performance, it's a recording. You buy a piece of music, be it a ringtone, a cd, or digital content, and you can do whatever the hell you want with it. #lawsuits
@getz76: Yeah. ASCAP is a great organization, but some of its recent moves seem petty and embarrassing. The worst: asking to collect on music samples on iTunes. Samples that, you know, get people to actually buy the songs legally! #lawsuits
@frigg and @Cordfucious of Tech: I understand the need to push a bit and posture so you can get to a happy middle ground eventually, but it is over the top. #lawsuits
Yeah? Well I'd like to see the music companies start charging guys who roll down the street blasting kanye west for forcing me to listen to that crap. I mean, what the fuck were they thinking? #lawsuits

There *is* a resistance movement in Iraq, and they *are* fighting their invaders. Do you know who their invaders are, you simpering moron?
I love sweeping pronouncements about the whole of human history from lack-wits who can't even spell. #somaliterroristsringtones
