What would be awesome is if this program were to succeed, and then be expanded to include actual cleanup. I'm envisioning thousands of these things swimming around, finding bits of garbage, grabbing a bunch (swallowing them, perhaps?) and returning to base. Sort of like a water-borne Wall-E, I suppose.

@fastmike: If they do, then she's a dish. But if they smell like cologne, leave them alone.

@EdgarJ602: I was thinking the same thing. Aside from the fact that they could be destroyed, I wonder what kind of internal injuries (if any) these would cause to a large shark.

@jggdotcom: You'd need a pretty fucking huge shark, the kind that don't show up off the cost of Spain. But even if there were a shark big enough, sharks are smart enough that after a single bite or two they'd leave it alone.

@EdgarJ602: It's also 8 feet long. I;m guessing it's biggest threat would be a shark, and since it's not giving off anything that would excite a sharks lateral line, I doubt it would get bothered with, especially a school of them.

@SpaceBat_GitEmSteveDave: Sharks are excited by electric impulses [www.creationdesign.org] As a robot, it would be like a Japanese cartoon to an epileptic kid.

@anonymousryan: Is that why they end up with license plates, boots, dolls, and other cool tasty stuff in their stomach?

@dysan819: What about the Kitner boy?

@Margatron: I got my measurement from the article and the post above itself:

Created by engineers at the University of Essex, they measure about 8 feet long, can swim at roughly 2.24mph and feature real fish-like undulating action

@jggdotcom: @anonymousryan: Actaully, sharks are known to eat a lot of garbage. License plates, cans, tire parts, etc. have been found in the stomachs of tiger sharks. They can keep living with that stuff in there.

@ZLevee: But I too was wondering how long it will be before the whole fleet of these $30,000 things are eaten.
