So are Mythbusters even pretending to investigate "real" myths anymore? Because two trucks colliding with a car at the speed of sound and fusing together into one mass sounds like it wasn't exactly sent in by email from Bubba Joe Johnson of Newark, NJ.
@mackensie: And funny, I see tires and other cars parts when they investigate the wreckage afterwards. But I guess b/c you can't see them in some photos/parts of the video, they don't really exist, right?
@TheCapt: Well there's your proof. I saw no wreckage strewn about in those photos/videos, so none exists. Now if you will excuse me, I will stick fingers in my ears now ::LA LA LA LA::
Energy is the square of mass * speed. That rocket sled must have been heavy.
Imagine a heavy guided tungsten projectile released from the SR-71 at mach 3. That was a kinetic weapon the department of defense was considering at one time. No trace of explosives. But total destruction.
@FrankenPC: It seems to me that in order for an SR-71 to achieve mach 3; it would need to be totally streamlined. Adding any type of external payload or even having bomb bay doors open would require the plane to slow down considerably. I'm pretty sure the SR-71 was never used as a weapons platform...someone correct me if i'm wrong.
It's amazing to see that rocket travel at that speed. It's more amazing to think of, as Adam says, a commercial airliner going only 30% slower than that. Imagine how cool a 747 would be if you could watch it go by at that speed from that distance. Something as big and heavy as a building travelling that speed would be pretty awesome to say the least.
@shufflemoomin: Yeah I didn't get that comment by Adam. 30% slower? That's pretty slow for a large airliner. I've been on flights that have the tv's w/ map & airspeed shown and seen it hit just over 600mph. So that's only ~ 10% slower. Most of the time at cruising alt you're going to be going like 520 - 570mph.
@Jackhole: Keep in mind that the speed shown on the maps on airliners is your ground speed, not your airspeed. Airliners fly in the jetstream when they can, where they can take advantage of tailwinds.
But it kind of drives home (sorry) just how much an airliner would disintegrate when flown into a large, hard object at speed. Like, oh, the Pentagon perhaps? This video should be shown to the conspiracy nuts who claim it was a missle and not an airliner.
@AndriaDadlike: Won't work. I like my idea even better. Give them a building like Building 7, let them get all of their "best" implosion experts, give them explosives, then set the building on fire. If they can set charges in a burning building and "pull it", then I might buy their claims.
Well, as soon as I heard Adam say that, I knew he was wrong, as he has seen bullets being fired, and I'm pretty sure the rockets they have made probably got close if not a little over the speed this thing did.
@alrey: 700mph is the sled speed, which except in extreme conditions is not the speed of sound. Many bullets can never be "silenced" as the bullets themselves break the sound barrier, depending on the load they are using, of course. Some are made to not go that fast.
@boot shrew: Correct! At SRB separation, it is usually traveling at 1,400 m/s or, according to Google Convert, ~3,131mph. Just before orbit is attained, it's going 8,000 m/s, which translates to ~17,895mph
@WhiteGuyOnWebCam_GitEmSteveDav...: Oh please. I'm quite sure he meant fastest thing he's seen w/ the naked eye and on/near the earth's surface. Not w/ the aid of high-speed cameras. Semantics. We've all seen the space shuttle on video traveling at 18,000 mph. I've seen Iridium sats and the ISS traveling at several km/s from the ground (I bet Adam has too). I've seen meteors traveling across the sky at anywhere from 10km/s to 72km/s - yes that's kilometers per second (I bet Adam has too as well as most people on the planet). Semantics.
@Jackhole: He probably meant seeing it at that close of a distance. As we all have done we have spectated stuff like these before (rocket launches, meteors, etc.). But to actually be at the test site/launch site, and seeing it with your own eyes at that close of a distance, to be there when the rockets fire, I think that's what he meant.
Plus he did get to flip the switch, that lucky bastard.
@Cubic_Hour: The issue with TV science is not so much with the shows as it is the dumbasses that think it is real science.
And in so far as Mythbusters is concerned, I really don't give a flying fcuk so long as eventually they make it go boom! (and they show me the high-speed)
@Gregg Symington: Yeah, but I wonder if these sons of bitches are cleaning up after themselves. That's why there's trash and debris all over the freaking world.
@cso1982: Big one. Funny you got that. A couple years ago my wife & I were leaving Bluepoint Restaurant in Atlanta late at night. Going up the stairway, some guy had bumped into my left shoulder and was sort of not making the most clear path for me to exit. I turned and immediately knew it was Elton. We exchanged hello's; he was actually very gracious. He humored me for several minutes, even invited me to eat with him!
