Philips' SA2840 GoGear PMP is Shuffle-esque, Squeezes in a Screen

Laughing in the face of the clip-on Coolman MP3 player and almost widdling in the trousers of the iPod shuffle itself is Philips' new GoGear SA2840 PMP. It's petite, clip-on and comes with a 4-line screen. Yup, even though it's just 1.6-inches square and 0.6-inches deep its got a 128 x 64 pixel OLED and 4GB of memory. There's also voice recording, a sound-enhancing FullSound system and it sells for around $80. There's the SA2825 as well, with just 2GB but an FM radio function, and this'll set you back about $45. Senslux SLD Desklamps Try to See Off Your Winter Blues, Acne

Senslux's new SLD range of desk lamps will light your stuff with LEDs for low power-consumption eco-friendliness, and come in three types. The SG-1500 model appears to be just a plain ol' desk lamp, but the SF is apparently a "full spectrum" lamp, presumably to give more natural light to combat the dim winter sun. The last, SA model, claims to be a light therapy for acne. Brilliant. Available in Korea for around $150, not sure if or when they'll make it over here. [Aving]

It May Be Too Late for Combo Blu-ray/HD DVD Drives

Plextor has just announced a couple of new Blu-ray drives that also read HD DVDs, clearly designed for the poor saps who made the wrong choice in the format war. At first it might seem like an OK choice for people with a HD DVD collection quickly growing obsolete, but for $500 for a read-only drive or $600 for a burner, maybe a better idea would be to just get a straight-up Blu-ray drive and consider your HD DVD losses an early adopter tax. Philips' GoGear SA52 PMP Has Audio Upscaling

Philips' GoGear SA52 music and video player looks quite nice, with the Creative Zen-like curved lines and directional pad, but where it really stands out is this interesting audio upscaling feature. The DSP is supposed to enhance your MP3s and WMA and AAC files, but to us that sounds like some sort of audio alchemy, creating sound where there was silence before. Is a 128kbps MP3 file going to sound as good as a 320kbps one when you use this? Doubtful, but it might sound slightly better than it did before. 4GB of storage and WMV playback round out this pretty decent looking player. [Tech Digest]

Believe It or Not, Sony Bravia Theater Systems are Walking On S-AIR

Sony's latest venture into wireless home-theater-in-a-box 5.1 systems includes options for wireless rear speakers and a new system called S-AIR that can transmit audio from your home theater to smaller clock-radio receivers in other rooms, up to a precise-sounding 164 feet away. They all have five-disc 1080p-upconverting HDMI DVD players and an included TDM-iP10 iPod dock. (Tellingly, the dock for Sony Network Walkmans is sold separately.) Here's the product breakdown: More »

Philips SA9345 Flash-Based Media Player With Smooth Looks, Touch Controls

Phillips adds yet another flash MP3 player to the veritable sea of choices, releasing the Philips SA9345 that holds either two or four gigs of your favorite MP3, WMA or WMV files. Its main selling point is its slim and diminutive form factor, at a third of an inch thick and just over 3.5 inches tall, but Philips certainly isn't bragging about that 1.8-inch 320x240 LCD screen, which you might want to employ a microscope to look at. We like those touch-sensitive controls, but we're not too crazy about the $264 price for the 4GB player. If a measly 2GB doesn't bother you, the price lowers to $202. Nice design, but it's hard for us to get too excited about this one. [Philips]

Sleek Audio SA6 Earphones Let You Change the EQ With Interchangeable Parts

Here's a unique idea: Sleek Audio just rolled out its SA6 earphones with interchangeable parts that can either accentuate the highs or lows according to your whim. Called the VQ System, you're offered a choice of three small attachments to the earbuds that regulate the amount of treble you'll hear. On the other side of each earpiece, there's a choice of three interchangeable bass ports that can either smack you upside the head with some big booming bass, or physically roll off the lows according to your preference. In fact, just about every part of these unique earphones is replaceable. More »

Philips Decides People Like Colorful MP3 Players

We've already covered most of the best items from the Philips Holidays In June show, but we did a little digging and found at least two items that are not at the show. In addition to the Black and Pearl White GoGear SA23 line, Philips will soon add a Light Blue 1GB SA2313 and a Pink 1GB SA2312. I seem to recall some other company deciding that colors are a good idea, especially in that 1GB range. Oh, but these have built-in displays.

Dealzmodo: Sony Flat-Panel Speaker HTiB, $180

Circuit City has a decent Sony SA-FT3H 5.1-channel surround sound system for $180, which is at least $70 cheaper than most other places. The speakers are less than 1.3 inches deep and include a 150-watt subwoofer. Not a bad solution for the person with a minimalist style or not a lot of room. More »

TViX M-5100SH: Trashcan-shaped HD Player Exactly Like Last Week's TiVX M-4100SH

Last Friday we mentioned the M-4000SA and its fully H.264-capable brother the M-4100SH. Well, apparently the M-4xxx series' mom is like Cartman's and they also have a secret sister: the M-5100SH. This 3.5-inch hard drive HD player is just like the M-4100SH except for a higher price tag, which will buy you its Tron-like trashcan shape. Hit the jump for a big picture of the back showing all its private parts and the quite amazing technical details. More »

Mario Kart R/C Racer

Still can't get enough of Mario Kart even though Nintendo's been pimping the series out on every platform? Grab this Mario Kart R/C racer and make your own races. Well, actually, all your races would be Mario vs. Mario vs. Mario. Unless, of course, you get dress one up in a Barbie dress, cover another in dog fur, and spray paint the third with green and shave off his love handles. Then you'd really have a Mario Kart race. New Video Watermark Tech Traces Bootlegs Back to Pirates

Future set-top boxes and gateways from Thomson SA are going to come with video watermarking tech that will allow investigators to pinpoint the origin of pirated videos. The tech, NexGuard, identifies "individual copies of the films distributed digitally to cinemas or on DVD as preview copies for reviewers and awards juries." Before video content leaves a gateway or set-top box, it embeds a watermark unique to each device using the box's digital video chip. More »

Philips SA4000 Digital Audio Player Has 512MB of Memory, Not Much Else

Philips must be trying to redefine the term "entry-level" with is SA4000 digital audio player, which sports a massive amount of built-in storage—512MB— and a seven-color backlit screen. Something called a AAA battery supplies the DAP with power and it's rated to last for 10 hours. Thank God it PlaysforSure. No price listed, though. For shame. More »

Marantz SA-7S1 SACD Player: People Use SACDs?

Marantz is launching the SA-7S1, which promises to be the Dreadnought of Super Audio CD players. The gold-colored player's main claim to fame is the built-in anti-vibration electronics (or so says the machine translation). Otherwise, it plays Super Audio CDs, "regular" CDs and burned CD-R/RWs; no MP3 support here, I'm afraid. The Super Audio CD Player That Could goes on sale in Japan this October for about $6,200. A bit much? More »

Ho-hum Philips SA1200 DAP

Philips has released the SA1200 DAP to appeal to the average music listeners everywhere. Nothing to spectacular or fancy about this one, it plays music. Easy enough. It is available now at some places for $65 or so and comes in 512MB and 1GB flavors. More »
