Correction, weve been making music longer than we have been recording history.

@Gilbert Capulong: The key word here is "writing". As long as human beings have been around, chances are good we've been making music in some fashion, but it wasn't being written.

Is vinyl "truly lossless"? The musical data is still going through format conversion from its original master...

@10:02am: It's also "lossy" from a physical perspective. The grooves get worn down and lose their fidelity. I know, I have New Order- Substance record that skates because I played it until it was smooth.

@ARP: Anyone who loves their LP's will invest in a laser turntable to ensure that the only factor for wear is age, not running the record.

Plus magnetic tape is still an analog format.

Great article, but it seems to blur the line between media and format. "Magnetic tape", for instance, is a media, while MP3 is a format. You could technically put MP3 data on magnetic tape - it would just be horribly inefficient.

don't we also have a broadcast sent into outter space? i know it's not a recording per se, but it seems pretty permanet as it is gonna travel forever. when did we start doing that?
