It is an open cell phone platform that any manufacturer can develop against and use. Which is a huge step towards being able to write standardized apps and services for cell phones. As of early last year Motorola had to develop for as many as 7 cell phone OSes.
The iPhone, while very nice, is not the end all be all of products for everyone.
