I enjoy my ps3 and xbox360, but I find I spend most of my time online playing Mario Kart Wii. Unlike the rest of you naysayers, I actually like my Wii.
Must... resist... laughing... * years? 3 years, even? Wow. That's quite a bold statement considering most people don't play their Wii more than a couple months before moving on to something with more depth. Oh, and good luck trying to sell a non-HD console to Americans that are finally going digital in a matter of days.
@nukee: Go try to buy a non-HDTV at Wal-Mart. Except for the clearance TVs that some stores may have, they should all be HDTVs now. While yes, having a digital tuner is different than being HD, mandatory digital tuners and the switch to digital broadcast is what has really pushed the demand for HDTVs hard because it has also encouraged more and more things to be broadcast in HD, especially since a lot of people used the transition as a justification to get a better TV rather than just getting a tuner.
What does it mean the the PS3 is a 'ten year console'? I know it's still new and all but are they really going to wait 10 years for another playstation? I don't see the need for another one anytime soon, but just wondering if that's what that means.
@mfischer579: Not necessarily that there won't be another system for 10 years, but that the system will still be marketable for 10 years. By that logic, the PS2 is already a 9 year console and could possibly make it to 10 years (in Japan, still a few months short in the U.S.)
@ceilingFANBOY: Plus there are diminishing returns to console processing power. The graphics quality gap between the PS2 and PS3 is huge, but how much better can a future PS4 actually be? The PS3 already outputs 1080i at basically photo-realistic quality. The limiting factor to game detail is now the talent/number of game artists you hire, not whether or not the console can handle it.
With Microsoft and Sony closing the gap between heavy gamer device and happy-funtime accessory console, the Wii would experience a great deal of turbulence in less than half that time. 3 years is certainly doable, unless the other two suddenly close the gap completely with lots of time-killer games that use motion controls. Nintendo would be stupid to let the Wii stagnate that long.
@Pwnerjam3.0: Really? All of nintendos products are mainly for kids? I know more adults than kids that own a nintendo product. In my adult life I have owned every generation of gameboy minus the micra, and every generation of DS, excpet for DSi since my DS works just fine currently and I still have GBA titles to play.
Where I work I would say that 90% of management own a nintendo product, be it DS, Wii, or a gamecube. They also all own an iphone, with the exception of solitaire and maybe sudoku we game on platforms made primarily for gaming.
i don't see the iPhone replacing nintendo anything per se, but i do agree folks aren't gonna wanna carry abunch of devices for very long. and if nintendo thinks people will pick a DS over any phone they're smoking crack. and crack is wack.
"I do not imagine that iPhone will dominate the Nintendo DS market..."
So, the only person to ever refer to the iPhone without the "the" outside of Apple employees (who are required to not say the "the" and pretend like it sounds normal) is the president of Nintendo.
I detect Apple fanboyism is your remarks. Just saying that Nintendo should do this and that because they will get crushed by Apple, it's the same talk that people said when the Xbox 360 came out and the PS3 too that they would destroy the Wii because it did not have graphics to match them.
The iPhone is a great product, but you are giving it too much credit for what it's worth.
@Mark Wilson: i have never seen you guys respond to the fanboy remark they often hurl at yall. i like it. you're fierce. like a tiger. but not a las vegas show tiger. a discovery channel, eat your baby tiger.
The remark you pulled from Nintendo was specifically about Apple.
You never mentioned gaming on another device.
You closed with a comment on how Apple can match Nintendo on any radical market movements.
This was an article about Apple and Nintendo. If this was meant to be a critique on the larger issue smartphones moving into the traditional handheld gaming market you didn't articulate it.
Gaming on smartphones is pretty much an all Apple affair. The treo and blackberry aren't really going to enter into the mobile gaming market.
@Techguy1138: @Techguy1138: The DS had an incredible run, and the DSi has shown some impressive initial sales. But with the rise of the smartphone (which obviously includes the iPhone), Nintendo will need to move beyond corporate trash talk and figure out how they'll survive in the mobile gaming marketplace when consumers refuse to carry two devices. You know, a plan that doesn't include going the way of Sega on mobiles.
So he's a vampire because he runs a profitable company that makes a product that is in high demand? Not sure where the vampire analogy is coming from, unless it means he's the King of Black Friday, which would make him the King of Darkness, so maybe a Satan Photoshop would work better?
I'm not trying to be picky. I love the Photoshops. I just didn't get this one.
I confess I bought one in the frenzy. For some reason I was excited to pay full retail for it. I spent $70 on one additional controller and $50 for a game. I want to buy 2 more controllers for guests but another $140 is hard to swallow right now. One thing that pisses me off is that although its capable of browsing the internet you have to pay to unlock the ability.
We have used the Wii once so far. My children seem actually too little to really use it and the games are too childish for me to use, so far at least. I'm probably going to buy the Fit so we can at least justify it for exercising. We probably won't use that either. I have hopes for Mario Cart, wish me luck. I pwned people on the Gamecube in that game so maybe my skill will transfer over.
I wish my wife would have let me pick up the damn X-box.
A much better purchase on Black Friday was the Blu-ray player and I'm using the hell out of that. Picked up Batman today and can't wait to watch it tonight.
@vista64guy: "although its capable of browsing the internet you have to pay to unlock the ability."
Really? I haven't paid a dime, and I can browse the internet just fine on my Wii.
I have both an Xbox and a Wii. Here's what I tell people when trying to decide whether to buy a Wii or an Xbox:
Get an XBox if you want a system you'll never be able to play, but always want too, or get a Wii if you want a system that you'll always be able to play, but never want too.
@Rabid Penguin: How did you manage that? I just got a Wii and to add the browser feature they want 500 Wii points ($5.00). Although I am very pleased with the console. When family comes over everyone can play from my 4 year old to my 76 year old father in law. Lately I have been having a blast with "World of Goo" and am eagerly anticipating the Wii release of RockBand 2. I may have made a mistake however getting my wife a WiiFit for Christmas. Now I may never get time to myself on the console again.
@BigDogues: When the Wii first came out (which is when I bought it) the browser was free. I didn't know they started charging for it, but I haven't had to pay for upgrades or anything.
After putting well over 100+ hours into just Brawl (just for versus, total is a lot more)... I think the ~$300 investment was worth it. Sure, I'm playing my room mate's X360 a lot more, but that's because I don't have one and this was the first time I spent quality time with the machine.
I mean, I played my N64 to death for multiplayer games like the original SSB, Mario Kart, Party, Vigilante 8 (and 2nd Offense), and others. Especially SSB, the cart is now as finnicky as an NES game.
@Plan303e: SSB: Brawl and Twilight Princess alone make it worth the purchase. I say this as a fellow brawler with well over 100 hours in versus play. There's a community of smashers at my college, you bring in a wii and they will come. No need to announce it.

I mean my first statement didn't come out right. There is nothing wrong with my Wii.

Mega Man 9. Sure you can get it on the XBOX, but for some reason playing Mega Man on the XBOX just doesn't feel right.
