    I wouldn't be so glum. I think, technically, American higher education is still the best in the world--it's just that the rest of the world became much more competitive, which is only a good thing in the long run.


    Worldwide, we've done some pretty amazing things in conjunction with foreign universities/labs/companies--it's just that the press generally isn't interested in these things anymore. For example, think about how most news sources focused on the LHC's potential "hazard", instead of all the cool shit that will potentially come out of it and the monumental feats of science that went into building the damn thing.


    One current trend does make me a very sad panda: I believe that too much emphasis is being placed on practical/applied science, as opposed to pure/fundamental research. Too often, it seems like universities worldwide are too busy designing the tops of their pyramids to realize that there is no substantive foundation.
