Or if you are feeling daring just buy a replacement bezel from ChinaOnTrade . $25 and you have to take a part your phone, but it will be brand new. [www.chinaontrade.com]#iphonebezelbrushup
I am not sure if the bezel is solid metal or plated. If it is solid then standard metal polishing tips apply. Start with 600 grit wet dry polishing paper, and move on up to 1200 or better. Or jewelers rouge, a dremel and a polishing drum will buff up just about anything. Careful with the Dremel, it can get your work surface hot if used too fast or too long. #iphonebezelbrushup
As a side note, I am amazed how tough the iPhone is.
I've never abused a phone as much as my iPhone - mostly by virtue of using it far more than any other phone I've had (incl. Curve and Tytn).
The screen can take an absolute beating without showing anything, but that bezel and the back scratch. I'm not too worried about it. On the contrary, it reminds me that this is a surprisingly tough device. #iphonebezelbrushup
@mmmiles: Agreed about the screen. I've dropped my iPhone onto concrete at least half a dozen times. Each time it landed with the screen facing down, and each time I thought it would end in a shattered screen, but nope. Still fine and dandy. #iphonebezelbrushup
Just be careful if you do this, it WILL void your warranty. I used to do this to the back of all my iPods and friend's iPods so I did it to my first gen iPhone. Even though they knew that it requires no tools to do this they cant replace a broken one with this done. Also, they think its an aftermarket item as well sometimes.
@s2krobert: Actually, I've worked for Apple, and that's not going to void your warranty. Geniuses are looking for major cosmetic damage, not some dainty scratches on the bezel. #iphonebezelbrushup
Well, sponge is taking too long for me, and wasn't getting the effect I wanted, so I went with a really fine sandpaper... Looks pretty nice... #iphonebezelbrushup
@Rosa Golijan: I did. I also brushed the Sleep/Wake button, the volume button, and the silence ring switch. I think it makes the iPhone look a little more personal and unique, I'm sure not many people are willing to take sandpaper to their $300 phone... ;) #iphonebezelbrushup
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't remove the marks... it blends them into a brushed (evenly scuffed) finish... this is apparent in the video but not in this article, so be careful. :-)
@Rosa Golijan: That's better, thanks. I was envisioning someone reading this by their kitchen sink and jumping the gun & going to town on there bezel. ;-) #iphonebezelbrushup
Are you a mind reader Rosa? I looked up how to do this today on MacRumors. They guy used steel wool instead of the sponge. You can also do this to the backs of iPods.
@macpatrik: I think steel wool would dramatically change the bezel, mind you, but it still seems like a decent enough approach.
And yes, I am a mind reader. And while I've done the second thing you're thinking of, there's no chance in hell I'll do the first, you dirty-minded person. #iphonebezelbrushup
Steel wool is available in a variety of coarseness grades. The finest can be used to polish scratches out of CDs so it depends on what grade you get. #iphonebezelbrushup
@mensrea: Why is your comment all the way down here? I had to scoll the entire comment page to find someone else who likes to fix things by fixing them and not by breaking them further.
