Google is officially a large, godless corporation. That Email read like it had been sanitized by several layers of management.

Yeah it sucks that they're not paying out bonus, but they also lost something like 50%+ of their share price. We're in a new economic reality and things like huge bonuses, and massive employee incentives need to be rethought.

Yeah it's nice to reward your underlings, but it's even nicer to remain in business.

ADDENDUM: due to overwhelming interest in the Dream phone from Googlers worldwide, management has agreed to extend this form of compensation throughout fiscal 2009. At the end of each month, each Googler will receive 1, 2, or 3 Dream phones based on previous levels of compensation. We are sure you are as excited about this innovative form of compensation as we are! Again, as reminder, Googlers should not resell any item given to them by Google. Please review our Personal Transactions policy [removed].

Q: Are there tax implications to this?

Google is covering the taxes for this gift; there will be an extra payroll run before the end of the year to cover the taxes. If you have further payroll or HR-related questions about this gift please email [address removed]

I hope Google realizes that the taxpayer is still liable for taxes owed. As well as the tax on the extra payroll to pay for the tax on the phone.

Under the US Tax Code, all income, unless otherwise specified, is income.

@OMG! Chrismukkah!: If any employees have additional questions about the tax issue, we recommend you Google them. -Mngnt.

@ripfire: As I read it, Google is paying the employees an extra disbursement to cover the cost of the taxes that the employees will have to pay for the gift.

I'm not a tax attorney by trade but do remember from my tax classes that paying an employee's income tax as part of their salary is additional income. Basically, your job can't pay your income tax.

@OMG! Chrismukkah!: Incidentally, Apple made a similar arrangement (w/ bigger numbers) to cover the taxes on the Jobs Jet.

From $20K to a phone you have to pay for service on. That sucks. But still better than what some Yahoo employees got two weeks ago - a pink slip.

My bonus went straight into my money market account.

So they get a gift which requires them to pay for service? I don't understand. Is Don on the phone?

@NHTOB_GitEmSteveDave loves->★: It's the ultimate gift giving technique. Give a gift that sounds great at first. Then the user starts paying monthly for, and you make money back on your gift!

Why haven't I thought of this before.. Now, what to get my girlfriend for Christmas that will end up paying for it self...

I asked for a mai tai, and they brought me a pina colada, and I said no salt, NO salt for the margarita, but it had salt on it, big grains of salt, floating in the glass
