I understand you think that Apple and Microsoft are rivals. And yes, Apple considers Microsoft its rival; Microsoft doesn't think the same.

Apple and Microsoft have teamed up numerous times over the years. When the Mac platform was launced, Gates was at the conference, discussing how he - a software developer - could help bring productivity software to Apple.
When Apple was in danger of going under in the Nineties, Microsoft made a $150 million investment in the company, accompanied by a pledge to continue making Office for Mac - vital to Apple which did not have a comparable productivity suite.
It's easy to forget that Apple is a hardware company with a software division while Microsoft is a software company.
