    @bonedog73: If you pull a plastic butter knife on a cop he will most definitely pull out his real side arm. "Oh those brutes! It was just a plastic butter knife!" Yeah, but he's a cop, WTF are you doing pulling anything on them? In this instance they tased to subdue an agitated, unarmed, combatant so that they didn't HAVE to shoot him.

    @BoardShortin'_GitEmSteveDave: What was the alternative before the taser? That's what I'm asking? Does the taser makes the cops job safer or do they just like tasing people at an instant? This is a potentially lethal device.

    @Mark 2000: They would pepper spray them, club/manually subdue them, use rubber bullets(which kill close in), etc... A tazer has a 17 foot range, which is the range a person with a knife is considered lethal. It has a laser sight to let them know where they are going to hit, which means no chance of an innocent bystander being hit. And unlike the previous methods, whenever a taser is deployed a superior officer and also medical services are called to document/check out the patients. At least that's how it is in the US in almost ALL police departments.
