Most security systems only do something if the burglar gets in... it's better just to keep them out.

I should have known better than to try reading comments on the second page!
(I'm sure that the video is hilarious.)

I am also getting a license soon so I can pick up a shotgun for any burglers/zombies who want to attack my farm.

A what to own a shotgun?
What communist oppressive regime you live under?
Seriously i own over 100 firearms only about 20 were bought from licensed gun dealers the rest from individuals or estates...all of which do not require paperwork :)
Seriously, you need to question why you need a license to own a gun....a knife kills just as dead, would you accept needing a license for it.
/how easily people give up what was fought so hard for and so many died to win.

Btw...as a NJ native, I am slightly saddened.
But please send my love to: Dizzy, Angel, Ash Lee, Crystal, Huck, Skeeter, and whatever the owner of the green paw prints name is.
-And where is your paw print?

Personally I just have a thing that looks like an alarm number pad glued to the wall that has *entry detected* flashing on it at all times. If any button is pushed on it, it starts flashing *police in route*
It doesn't call anybody, but nobody knows that. Except the Internet, now. Oops.

I've heard that Medeco's aren't all they're cracked up to be. (Engadget has 2 articles). ;)
And is he an awake security guard, or sleepy? (BTW - I thought you lived in Suffolk?)

I live in Brooklyn. And the guards work on 8-hour shifts.
And the 70th Precinct House is 4 blocks away.

This is also nice as you can come home, open the garage, and turn your lights on all with the same key fob.
But mostly I've found that not making your house a target tends to work. Mow your damn lawn. Get window locks that augment existing locks, on windows you never open cut wooden dowels (make tabs to pull them out in an emergency) to hold them shut.
I've had my home broken into twice, and both times they came in through a locked window with a weak lock. I have yet to come home to a broken window or kicked in door. If they want in, they're going to get in.
Sean, what exactly are you looking to guard against? Intrusion, theft, both?

You can do this very easily with wireless systems. Hard wired can be a little trickier I think.
Motion detectors pretty much don't work if you have any sort of active/semi-active pets. Which, you can often negotiate to have additional window protection installed in place of the motion detector, but that's kind of neither here nor there.
The ones that can do wireless control are again, very cool. They can be used to control lighting in your home, etc.
The really coolest alarm system I've ever seen was integrated into the house's wiring grid. It handled Ethernet, motion-detected lighting (including floor-level sconce lighting that only lit up dimly at night while tracking your movement) and everything else. It would e-mail/txt you every time someone would punch in a code to enter the home, or if your alarm went off, and which room/whatever.
But, if you want the start of something REALLY cool and geekworthy, look at some of the ones that incorporate home automation too. I'm kind of surprised that Giz hasn't done a review of what all can be done w/ gear from companies such as OnQ Legrand when they cover TVs and everything else.
