    so....what did they learn? how much debris will a probe throw up when smashed into the moon?

    @facepuncher: By smashing a probe into the moon, you can run a spectral analysis of the dust thrown out and determine the precise composition of the dirt below the surface dust. This is enormously important for understanding what resources the moon has available for future human colonies to exploit.

    That's why the US has a probe heading there now for exactly the same reason.

    @Geisrud: Ok, now I have a real question. How do we ever see a "full moon"? There doesn't seem to be any alignment of the earth, moon and sun in which the complete face of the moon that we see will be exposed to sunlight without being partially blocked by the earth.

    The moon's surface area is still hella large at almost 1/10 that of Earth. It's not like this thing would run into Earthling debris unless the mission was designed to target it.

    That's like saying if you drove from NY to CA, what's the chance of catching a glimpse of Jason Chen's toaster unless that's what you set out to do in the first place.

    @Geisrud - MS150 fundraising time!: Sure, I've seen the videos of Chen making toast in slow motion and then eating it, and yeah I've read all the websites about why it has to be faked, why the toast looks too crispy, not crispy enough, etc., but I just have to believe that it's real.

    I don't know.

    Maybe it's because I felt like such a tool when I busted into Frucci's apartment to get a look at his infamous microwave oven after all those rumors started circulating that pictures of him with it in the background were 'shopped...

    Then again, Chen's toaster. Chen's toaster. Yeah. The more I think about it, the more I may just have to check it out for myself. Know what? You're right. When you're right you're right. I must see that toaster! I MUST SEE THAT TOASTER!

    @Brad Shaw:
    The Russians made several unmanned landings on the moon. Their first successful landing (impact landing) was Sept 12th 1959. The first successful US landing was July 28th 1964 (also an impact landing).

    I'd assume that they had a flag on at least one of their landers.
