I think what you aren't taking into account is that different people are going to be more comfortable utilizing the web in different ways, and on different kinds of hardware.
I tried a Nokia N810 tablet, and I own a WinMo smartphone, but by best internet experience comes from my Dell Mini 9 netbook because it's a much more comfortable platform and environment for me to type on and that larger screen helps my soon-to-be-43 year old eyes.
What I DO see and agree with however is my phone and my netbook being relegated to mere PMPs with the lack of an internet connection, so I agree the fun is at least partially web based if not moreso.
I think another part of it was the old mantra that held true back in 2001 that "WAP is crap". The mobile web is more robust now allowing for a better browsing experience on a smartphone.
See the netbook is something that is useless for most people. Yes, I could have a regular notebook with more power, but I needed the smaller size.
I can not afford a smartphone, and the service around here sucks.
I adore my eee900HA because it is small enough to take with me, but powerful enough to actually browse the internet(unlike the psp).
I do not use cloud apps. I installed openoffice and that works fine for me, I write on it at work during break time. I can play basic games such as RO, Diablo II, Starcraft, Warcraft 3.
Currently I'm dual-booting crunchbang and windows xp. not crunchee..crunchbang. I use the linux usually, but have to use xp when I'm working with things for mom, as she has no idea what to do with linux.
I would NOT recommend netbooks for people who want to do full time computing. You can NOT replace your notebook with these. I have a desktop I use for heavy gaming. Oh man you just pluggged the microsoft ads. I hate them...not that they're WRONG that macs are more expensive, but the misinformation in them is rampant. Forget the laptop. A budget family needs a desktop, as they're still cheaper.
Netbooks aren't useless, or a poor value when they suit the users needs for a lower cost than other options.
I have an HP Mini 1000 and I do all sorts of stuff on it - watch video, play music, work, write, do spreadsheets, presentations... every manner of work. 90% of the population only uses 20% of their laptop's capability, and that's what netbooks do very well. Sure if you're looking to do some video editing or photochopping it might not be the best device, but for the average consumer and most business professionals, a netbook is really all they ever need when they travel. And I'd even say they're pretty good just hooked up to an external monitor and keyboard as well.
The Takeaway is both the smartest morning talk show out there and the dumbest thing on NPR. And that's my takeaway. Bloop bleep.
@weatherman: For the most part I agree. When my current work laptop dies I think that a netbook is the perfect answer for the work I have to so on the road.
good one matt! i too think netbooks are useless for their price and lack of features. a good smartphone can be more powerful, cheaper and faster than a netbook. the only reason a person might want to use a netbook is because of the extra screen real estate.
I just wish netbooks were advertised as netbooks and not as fully functioning PCs. Most people I talk to that have netbooks hate them because they try to load all of their software onto them. Just start selling netbooks as companion PCs (which is what they're supposed to be) and customers will get it and appreciate them for what they are and not have these high expectations of them.
Pretty cool, Matt. So, what was it like? Was everyone cool? Did they tell you what not to say or anything? I'd be interested to hear the behind the scenes stuff.
@fate47 - Meh.: Yeah, from what I hear, the Political Officers for Gawker are tough. But I also heard that the one for Gizmodo slipped on some spilled tea.
@UnderLoK: nah. The aluminum MacBook is basically the best laptop you can buy in its range. It's flawless design with great performance. Netbooks are more kitchy like most PC laptops made of plastic. ;)
@BrAff: They aren't useless, they just aren't as good of a value as people make them out to be. If I didn't have a work laptop I would more than likely consider getting one... Oh wait, I have a MB at home... Yea I would pass ;)
so you managed to notice all the apple coverage, but not the post indicating how to filter it out, and yet STILL had time to come in here and whine about it, off-topic?
So... THIS is your brilliant plan to rectify this heinous negligence of your daily entertainment needs?
Hang on i'm getting a call... it's BLam... he say's he's very sorry that the site is not meriting your approval, and he'll get off this irrelevant apple stuff, and right on with some Thanko USB posts, your majesty, and can you ever forgive him?
@Corwin Loreman: Normally I would be inclined to say something along the lines of "if you don't like the Apple coverage, just don't read it". I am fine with tons of Apple coverage as long as it is not to the exclusion of everything else. In the past, Giz has been great about putting in a few "general interest" articles, even when Apple events are going on. This does not seem to be the case today. Do you really need John, Sean, Jesus, Adam, Jason, Dan - basically everyone - ALL do Apple coverage? I mean, throw a bone to the non-Apple people here.
Everyone cares about July 4, for instance, but imagine if the NYT wrote only about Independence on that date. That is just not balanced coverage - what happens is that a disproportionately high number of reporters get to cover July 4, and others are assigned to other news, so that there is some diversity.
Of course, this is subject to preference. I know many people will disagree with me, and that is a perfectly fine. I just like to see some color splashed into the sea of Apple Apple Apple.
And of course, this is not really a big of a deal as my whiny post might make it out to be. I would just like to say this to recognize that Corwin Loreman above should not be persecuted for having a valid opinion.

I know that the WWDC is a big thing but we are nearly one full page of Apple products now. No daily gadget deals or anything non-apple related?
Gizmodo: All Apple, All the time.
Let your true colors shine guys.
