While it is not yet truly and completely open, I fully expect it to be. How difficult would it be to have Google later on provide the ultimate in personalized ads to a TV set near you. Picture it; cartoons rendered 100% in Sketchup version 12 which renders a photo-realistic 'coke' can rather than a 'mountain drew' simply based on the sites google knows you visit...
I'm tired of all these android products that never seem to come out in the states. It seems that Giz posts some sort of non phone android powered gizmo that they never review. Is it because they never come out? That's what I think.
Wow, slow news day today huh? This isn't in relation to this post or anything, but I get home from a hard day's work hoping to lose myself in gizmodo.. and there's like 6 posts total today.
@AlexSea: If you haven't noticed, it's the weekend. People are usually out having fun with friends and family, not hunched over the computer posting news articles.
@Δεν βρέθηκαν λέξεις: HAHA wow. I actually didn't notice it was the weekend, I have a weird ass job and the days sort of run together. SORRY GIZ, I stand corrected.
Wow! So 1951 was the year kids began wanking it to scambled porn?! I thought I was trailblazer in the 80's. Gotta give it up to the Greatest Generation.
@Jack of all Tirades R.O.A.C.H.: I think you may be confusing April Showers and Homecoming with more contemporary titles, Golden Showers and Home, Cumming. That is, unless I'm unaware of Clark Gable's moonlighting jobs.
@Jack of all Tirades R.O.A.C.H.: And that's also when the ORIGINAL saying began when a mother caught her son in the act: "If you keep doing that, you'll lose your phonevision!"
So, this service lasted 18 years? Jeezus. I was curious, then, as to why it would flop, given how popular the pay-per-view concept is today. I found these two tidbits in a Wikipedia article:
"One of the major limitations of the Phonevision system was that due to the delay line being switched in and out, color could not be broadcast, as the 3.58 MHz phase lock necessary for NTSC color broadcasting could not be held. This limitation contributed to the demise of the system, along with the FCC authorization of subscription programming about 1969."
And that part where the "industry called Phonevision a 'massive flop'", yeah, those "industry folks" were...drumroll, please...The Theatre Owners of America. OF COURSE theater owners would call a home theater system a flop!
Anyway, nice find, Dan, and a great article about a near-miss technology that's--wow!--even older than I am. (Yeah, that is ancient.)
@GenerousHelpingOf_GitEmSteveDa...: I find it funny that you think it's cool to have your actual life online and available to everyone 24 hours a day, yet you are probably one of those paranoid people who won't use twitter... irony?
But yes, I am extremely paranoid. There are knives hidden on both mine and the passengers side of my bed, one in the shower, etc... My main paranoia is not being prepared when a situation comes along. I have no delusions that my life is exciting enough for someone to "track" me. If that was someones job, they better have them on suicide watch.
Oh, and BTW, to bring ALL my cameras down, you would need to get through two routers and three computers, one of which is a Mac.
Neither, thank you. Nothing beats live performance, so I just pay a troupe of local actors to recreate movies for me and the cats.
Tomorrow night they're doing Blade Runner (final director's cut version, none of that crappy VO). Anyone local to SF is invited to stop in, curtain at 8:00, BYOP.
@klaybc: Funny you should ask. The part of Decker had already been committed to troupe member Arnie Gerbler, so when another external actor demanded to be let into the production, all that was left was the role of the unicorn, and he took it.
And talk about your consummate professionals! Not only did he accept this lesser part, he assures me he plans to bring a new dimension to its interpretation. If you're reading this, Harrison, you ARE a real team player!
@Bustout: Well, since you're coming from that direction anyway, would you mind stopping by Fred's Donuts'n'Liquor Hut to pick a pint of Jack? Good pricing, just watch that old sly Fred gives you back the correct change.

I'm going to be welcoming them with open arms. No siege needed! Come right in, sir! Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hurry the fuck up and get set up, sir.

I highly agree. Keep the hardware simple and cheap and they'll have a clear winner!
