that $0.12 per GB is accurate if you take into account the sharespace itself. since you are not talking about buying just the drives here; the enclosure is not free.
and the smaller one is more cost effective because you can just but 2 of those for $1400, same amount of storage, $300 less
Well, if you wanted a bunch of NAS devices sitting around, then you could get a bunch of 500GB devices too.
The premium is "understandable" because you're paying to have it all in one place.
(I quoted "understandable" because it really is rather stupid. As I pointed out in an above comment, the entire thing is overpriced. And it's $0.21/gig. If it were 12 cents, I'd be considering an order right now).
Imagine how much heat this thing generates! you will need to add an Extra AC unit to your house to cool it. It must use at least 6 of the 1.5 GIG drives. this puppy will suck more power than a toaster oven!
And I love the fact its RAID 5. a lot of these High capacity drives seem to have reliability issues so at least if one dies you dont lose all 8 Terabytes of data, that would be a bad day indeed
It uses 4 x 2TB drives in the 8TB model. And that ain't a lot of heat. I mean, it's some, but not a lot. Esp. if they use their "green" drives in the unit.
I tried to look up its Wattage, but all the electrical specs say is:
Power Dissipation
AC Input Voltage 100-240 VAC
AC Input Frequency 47-63 Hz
Which is pretty funny as without more in the way of Amps, Watts, and/or Ohms there is no possible way to figure out the "power dissipation".

And at RAID0 you are just waiting around to lose 8TB of data.

Anyway, or 6 x $130 = $780 for 6 x 1.5TB = 9TB drives leaving you a little over $900 for a computer to put them in. Just sayin..
