Wait wait, I thought the whole point of a stealth fighter, was you know, to keep it as hush hush to the public as possible?

And the F22 is American, which sucks but is good knowing only the Americans carry the bad boy, and while the F35 is cheaper the F22 is a strike fighter and would have a field day with a F35.

Unless Tom Cruise is in the F35. #shinshinstealthfighter

What i dont understand is why Japan just purchase F35s. The F35 is being sold to multiple countries already and is stealth capable. It is also extremley cheaper then an F22. America isnt gonna give up their air superiority and even if it did I dont know how Japan would afford these fighters in the first place. We dont even build them anymore becauze there so god damn expensive. An F35 is a great alternative. #shinshinstealthfighter

@Daniel Yakobian: F-35 is a strike Fighter, Japan doesn't need strike fighter, because they don't plan on blowing anyone up anytime soon.

The don't really need F-22's for that matter, but as an air-superiority fighter, the F-22 has a much higher utility to the ASDF #shinshinstealthfighter

One thing that's always amazed me is the general American disdain for advanced military aircraft, while more than a few other countries are heavily lobbying for the right to purchase their own versions of our technology. Yes it's expensive, and yes it many times goes over budget, but ultimately, it's quite important. These aircraft have 10 - 20 year development cycles... they can't just be built on command when we suddenly need them. Furthermore, they are often used a political bargaining tools with our allies.

It's cool that Japan is building their own stealth aircraft, but I'm convinced it'd be better for everyone if our congress would just let Lockheed Martin build an exportable F22. #shinshinstealthfighter

@KRingg: It's easy to see both sides of the argument concerning 5th generation fighters. The opposition feels that the massive price tag is not worth it when the future of foreign conflict is insurgent scuttling and street-to-street battle; situations that the F-22 is ineffective at dealing. It is a gamble; I'd rather not be left hanging with too few F-22's if we get into WWIII with China and Russia, but if that doesn't happen, we can use that money very effectively elsewhere. #shinshinstealthfighter

@KRingg: With all the budget cuts towards programs like that, at least it would bring in some income. Not sure I want Japan running around with our technology though. #shinshinstealthfighter

@Shamoononon: I shave my legs.: True, I will never accuse the government (or any government, anywhere) of logically re-distributing funds very well.

The infamous B-2 Spirit buying spree comes to mind. I am a huge tech and military hardware junkie but I really want to see the military-industrial complex come to an end. #shinshinstealthfighter

@FightingChance: I think the F-35 would hold its own quite well when augmented with our force of several hundred F-22s. If we needed more, we could produce them as we held off with what we have on hand. #shinshinstealthfighter

@Con Seannery: Haha! There is no aircraft that can surpass the f22 that has been built to date. The f22 was decades of devolopement, the f35 was an el-cheapo fighter aircraft contest. The reason they made f22's AFTER designing the f35 was because the f22 was so much more capable that much much fewer aircraft would be needed to complete the same task multiple f35's would need.

that and the specs of an f22 will surpass an f35. #shinshinstealthfighter

@James Kinney: But the F-35 is MUCH cheaper, even if inferior. You can kill an F-22. It might take you a few aircraft to do it, but it can be done. My point was that the F-35 is perfectly sufficient to hold off an opposing force alongside the F-22s we DO have until we got more F-22s off the line in the event of a major conflict. #shinshinstealthfighter

@Con Seannery: The f35 costs ~80mill to the f22's 140mill... So yes it is far cheaper but as I understand it, the f22 is so much greater of a fighter that far far fewer are needed and it is actually cheaper to fly f22's than f35's. for example maybe only 3 f22's would be needed to do the job of 6 f35's (plus fewer pilots and fewer maintenance costs). This is a guess but I remember hearing that they would put 16 f18's up against 2 or 3 f22's and the f22's would not even break a sweat (obviously f18 doenst equal f35 but economy point is what I am making).

But all is all I think that a watered down f35 is ok to sell overseas but keep the f22 hear so we can crush the rogue f35's if we ever need to :) #shinshinstealthfighter

I bet everyone here is thinking one of two things:

    1) Some humorous prediction that the Japanese plane will be cheaper, more reliable, and more fuel efficient than American planes. Edit: with 2x as many cup holders.

    2) It will be able to turn into a robot.

Military Might rarely comes from technology advancements. It usually comes from $$$ and logistics.

It's one thing to create one top-secret "Firefox" jet. It's another thing entirely to build 350 of them, and keep them repaired, fueled, and armed.
