Did it ever occur to you people that cost is the bottom line for these companies and to buy 4000 different size boxes to have on hand all the time maybe costs a lot of money? Perhaps this particular shipping location didn't have the right sized box on hand but would rather send the item to the customer on time. As a person who purchases online most of the time, I just want my shit fast and could care less what size box it comes in. In fact, the bigger the better because I can use them to store stuff in my attic. So in theory I am saving the environment by reusing large shipping boxes rather than throwing out tiny boxes and then purchasing brand new large storage boxes from Office Depot. Ever think about that before posting these articles? Lame.
@adikt: I know the reasoning for the action, but that does not validate it. It is the bottom line / instant gratification that is a detriment to the human race as a whole. I am by no means a tree hugger, but will go the extra step to prevent needles waste.
And not everyone uses the over sized boxes for storage, because often one company ships to another company, and what does company B care about storage boxes? They throw them out faster than you can type an ill thought out post.
@zenpoet: Really? Do you work at a place that deals with massive amounts of cardboard? Because from my experience they would have an onsite bailer and would recieve roughly $100.00 USD per bail of compacted cardboard paid to them by a recycling company.
@adikt: No, I was just thinking of other large companies. We don't get much in the way of packaging here. But still, larger packaging takes up more space on trucks, causing more trips, using more resources, etc... It may cost a little more to have more than one size of box on hand, but the end result is better for the community as a whole, and not just the bottom line of one company.
The fact that someone ordered that paper online and had it shipped to them is true waste. Considering it would be cheaper for that person to drive to the store and back instead of paying UPS to ship it in a truck
@Spithead051: There's any number of reasons for it to be shipped. Perhaps it was part of a larger order, my Amazon purchases get split up all the freakin' time. Also perhaps this particular paper (hp makes like three versions of their photopaper) wasn't available in the nearby stores. Finally, it's possible the person doesn't live in a location that lends itself to finding HP photopaper locally. After having lived in Scappoose, Oregon, I can sympathize with the last one. Fred Meyer is great and all, but you can't always find EVERYTHING there.
@Spithead051: As I told pmac2332 above, the paper came free with a printer order I placed. Had I known they were going to waste so many resources to get it to me, I would have told them to keep it!
@pmac2322: Actually, this is from me, and to make matters worse, I got the paper free when I ordered a printer. The printer came in a separate shipment from a separate carrier, so not only did they waste all the packaging on the paper box, but both UPS and the USPS had to make trips to my office.
Why are you making fun at Best Buy. You can obviously see that box is not nearly large enough. Nor does it contain any packing peanuts to fill the gaps left by the air packets.
@comfortablesofa: Perhaps they could ship a ton of cables in a big box to Apple Stores in the US and then have orders for those cables filled from the Apple Stores instead of from Shanghai, China.
Because that's where this, like all other items ordered from Apple's website, comes from.
I'm not saying this picture is false but it is entirely possible to get a big box shipped from Apple and say this tiny thing came from it... There is no proof that this is real.
Regardless, the last time a post like this was made, Apple quickly fixed it. Let's hope the same happens.
hot damn you dont even need a box for that. Throw in a....wait for it, wait for it.... MANILA ENVELOPE!! HAHAHAHA. ok im not that funny.
On a similar not, I got 4 Blu-rays from Amazon today all in almost exact size padded envelopes instead of the smaller boxes i was used to...it was a nice eco-friendly change!
@efenili: I know a lot of shippers will often use a standard volume shipping measurement (like a flat rate box size) so they can buy them in bulk at a discount (winds up being cheaper than shipping these small items by weight due to the volume discount)...
It sucks but can actually save the shipper (and you) a decent amount of money on shipping at the expense of resources.
