    @Darksider1972: Judging by your outcry, I'm going to guess you live in Los Angeles. Now, as a resident of Los Angeles, I'm going to assume you are familiar with our sprawling reach and massive traffic issues. Would you really want to start an experimental same-day delivery service here?

    Our fitness center at work is relatively cheap (and automatically deducted from our paychecks), but lately the cheapness of it is starting to get to me. The locker room with the water-stained carpet that smells like wet dog, the constantly broken machines, or the asshats who sweat all over the machines without wiping them down (yeah, you'll get that last one anywhere).

    I've been considering paying more to actually, you know, get more.

    @Dancing Milkcarton: Regarding sweaty machines, consider the problem of video cassettes. There are people who get very upset when they got a VHS cassette and it was not rewound. They had to rewind, watch, and rewind a second time. Now if no one expected someone else to rewind a cassette for them, no one would have to rewind twice, you would just rewind, watch, and return. Once you accept that it is fruitless you expect others to do something for you, the sooner you'll be happy. It is not the idealistic solution, but it works.

    In Brazil there is an Government Institute responsible for this measurement, Inmetro(www.inmetro.gov.br). This year they had launch a stamp for cars regarding fuel consumption, for alcohol and gasoline, because here the general cars can run in both! Check the image.

    And, all these "unfunded mandates" increase the cost of the appliance in question. Do you want reasonably priced products or expensive ones?

    This should in fact be moot as you can find all the relevant comparison information online for free. And, no law was created to require someone to compile the data for you.

    @cpthook: explain how the costs of complying with a government regulation are higher than the costs of NOT complying with government regulation. Include fines and the cost in public relations.

    @DeusExMach believes you have his stapler: Uh, the point is when you make companies comply with reporting standards, whether it's this, or calorie content, or whatever, it's not free. There's a cost, and that cost is passed along to the consumer. It's no more free than having Consumer Reports do it.

    Additionally, there are all kinds of other negative consequences. Not so much for things like appliances, but say for labeling food content. Bye Bye small bakeries, "fresh daily offerings" at restaurants, etc. etc. Big corporations can certainly afford the up front compliance costs, but small operations cannot, which, for many things people want to regulate, means their death.

    Yeah, we definitely need an overhaul on this and the FDA's Nutrition Facts. In the UK, there was more detailed information you don't get in the States.
