Interestingly, the Facebook app is free while the Twitter app is $2 per month.

This comes as a catch-up to the Sidekick 2009, which comes pre-packaged with free Facebook and Twitter apps. Why the Twitter app needs a monthly fee is a mystery to me, but maybe it's really spectacular. [Thanks, Matt!]

<![CDATA[Staircase Slide Combo Built By The Coolest Parents Ever]]> At the request of his children, London architect Alex Michaelis installed a slide next to the staircase in their new eco-friendly dream home.

Here we see on of his children throwing caution to the wind and diving head first down the slide. But it's not just the kids having fun:

"We tend to have a lot of the kids' friends around-they're here perhaps more than at some of the other parents' homes," Michaelis says, adding that even grown-ups can't resist skipping the stairs. "We've been known after a big dinner party to use the slide."

No kidding—this is better than an elevator any day. Although, Michaelis' setup doesn't hold up to Rod Miller's spiral stair slide with fiber optic lighting. [Cookie Mag via Bloesem Kids via Neatorama]

<![CDATA[Is This the Longest Slide In The World?]]> I don't know if this it the longest slide in the world, but it sure looks like it. Where the hell is this because we want to ride it.

Or maybe is this one?

<![CDATA[This Giant Slip 'N Slide Looks Way More Fun Than Work]]> We love our jobs here at Gizmodo. But every once in a while even we find something more interesting than the latest breakthroughs in USB-powered humping animals. Impossible, you say? Not when it comes to a gigantic homemade Slip 'N Slide. It's tough to scale the slides' exact size, but it looks to drop a solid two stories before depositing its riders in the lake. And boy oh boy does this video make us jealous.

But...is it bad that we were waiting/hoping for someone to get hurt? Not like, never walk again hurt—just a solid Jackassian moment with some good old fashioned grass burns. [geekologie]

<![CDATA[Sidekick Slide Scarlet Available Now For $199]]> The rumored Sidekick Slide Scarlet (read: red edition) is available now from T-Mobile. It's just about the same as the regular Sidekick Slide, with myFaves support, QVGA display, microSD slot, 1.3-megapixel camera and all the Sidekick features that kids love. The phone's only major difference is the color Scarlet, and unlike the similarly-named actress, can be yours for just $199 with two-year contract. [T-Mobile]

<![CDATA[Fire Red Sidekick Slide Coming May, Juneish]]> We know how much you kids love the Sidekicks, which is why you'll be excited at getting a completely new color: fire red. Boy Genius has the image above, plus gives the estimated release date on T-Mobile at either late May or early June. It's no Sidekick 4, but it'll do for now. We're still wondering how much they had to pay Michelle Yeoh to pose for their promo shots. [Boy Genius]

<![CDATA[Touchscreen Blackberry Patent Suggests RIM has SideKick-Envy]]> A new patent filing by RIM for a "hybrid portrait-landscape handheld device with trackball navigation and Qwerty hide-away keyboard" suggests that future Blackberrys may remind us pretty strongly of a SideKick Slide, or perhaps an HTC Tilt without the tilt. We're guessing that the trackball is a version of their pearl controller, though the patent also makes reference to touchscreen technology. Looking at another image in the filing, you might also wonder if an accelerometer is included for iPhone-style screen orientation.

RIMslidepatent2.jpg
Of course, RIM has fired out lots of other patents in the past which we've yet to see in reality. So if you're a Blackberry fan who'd love a bigger slide-out keyboard, don't get too excited by this — we suspect you won't be seeing a real product anytime soon. [Reghardware]

<![CDATA[Keyport Slide Update: $50 Version Coming 2008]]> Not to inundate you with endless updates about the keyport key device, but we've got some news that you'll be glad to hear. After the limited edition $300 run is done, there's going to be a cheaper $50 edition of the Keyport slide some time in 2008.

Hopefully the keyport people don't take a page from the Optimus' book and gimp the lower-end version so hard that it's essentially worthless. Adding on keys to a keyboard is pretty lame, but adding on keys to a keychain is, well, just as lame. Most of you wouldn't pay $300 for something that consolidates six of your keys into one gadget, but would you pay $50? We would. We'd probably pay even more if they could make one of the keys a knife. Stabby stabby. [Key-Port]

<![CDATA[Sidekick Slide Back on T-Mobile, Hopefully Without Battery Contact Problem]]> The Sidekick Slide was pulled off the T-Mo product line last month due to faulty battery contacts, which forced the phone to power off by itself when opened one too many times. The DIY fix was to stick some business cards or loose paper into the battery compartment to make sure the contacts never de-contact, but we're sure Motorola has some fancier solutions (premium business cards, perhaps). In any case, you can buy one again for $199 after discounts and rebates. We still wonder how they got Michelle Yeoh to pose for that product shot. [T-Mobile via Electronista]

<![CDATA[Motorola Fixing Sidekick Slide, Hope to Have it in Stores Next Week (UPDATED, With Official T-Mobile Statement)]]> As suspected, Motorola has identified an issue with the battery contacts as the source of the problem on the Sidekick Slide and are currently testing an updated model. T-Mobile and Motorola hope to have the Slide back in stores next week.

UPDATED T-Mobile USA Statement on Sidekick Slide Motorola has determined that the intermittent power cycling on some T-Mobile Sidekick Slide devices was caused by a minor issue relating to the battery contacts. Motorola also has identified and tested a solution which it will implement for existing devices, and incorporate into newly manufactured ones. T-Mobile expects to begin offering the Sidekick Slide again beginning next week. If a customer has a Sidekick Slide that is experiencing the intermittent power cycle issue, they may contact T-Mobile Customer Care or go to a T-Mobile retail store for assistance and to discuss available options.

<![CDATA[Breaking: T-Mobile Pulling Sidekick Slide From Product Line]]> In light of the Sidekick Slide's recent problems, T-Mobile is pulling the Sidekick Slide from its product line. Readers are reporting the Slide is no longer on the T-Mobile product site, and anonymous inside sources are confirming the Slide has been removed from retail. This is convenient, seeing as Fridays (not to mention Friday night), are the best day to announce a story like this with the least news impact. More to come as we get more info. <![CDATA[Sidekick Slide Design Flaw Causes Resets?]]> Boy Genius reports that Sidekick Slide users are getting sudden restarts after sliding the screen up and down a few times. The cause? Apparently a build flaw that has too big of a gap between the contacts for the battery and the connector on the phone. Telstra, an Australian company, seems to be having similar problems on their version of the Motorola device called the Hiptop Slide. A temporary solution is to shove a piece of paper—maybe a business card—between the wall and the battery. This happening to any of you? [Boy Genius]

<![CDATA[Evolution of the Sidekick Flip From the 3, iD, LX to the Slide]]> As part of the Slide review process, Benny G and I just made this super-quick video of all four recent models: Sidekick 3, Sidekick iD, Sidekick LX and Sidekick Slide. What will you notice? Changes in flip action, changes in the flip sound effects, and remarkable difference in screen brightness and clarity. But one question, Motorola: if you're so cool building the Sidekick Slide, how come you didn't put a slide-open sound effect? I'll be sure to follow up on that mystery. [T-Mobile Sidekick]

<![CDATA[Sidekick Slide Super Sizemodo]]> First you get a taste of what the two sexy new Sidekicks, the LX and Slide, look like side by side. (Can someone please tell me why the logos are all oriented for "portrait" when there's never been a more "landscape" phone? I need an explanation.) That, my friends, is but the appetizer. Your main course is a smorgabord of Sizemodology, pitting the new little Sidekick Slide against the roughest, toughest "consumer" smartphones around: the T-Mobile HTC Shadow, Sprint's Palm Centro, the BlackBerry Curve, and of course the iPhone. You will find that deluxe second gallery after the jump.

<![CDATA[Hands All Over the Sidekick Slide (Verdict: Best Build Quality Ever)]]> The Sidekick Slide is the midrange Sidekick, at $199, and it has a smaller screen than the Sidekick "Luxury" LX. I couldn't tell so from the stuffy stock photos, but having held it and played with it, I do believe it has the best build quality of any sidekick. Motorola hardware plus Danger OS? Yes, please. It's also smaller. The keyboard's round buttons aren't so bad to type on, but they're not as easy to peg as the full-sized LX keyboard, and they're lined with velvecron, that fuzzyish paint for gadgets. Sidekick loyalists might not like the sliding screen, but I think it's tops.

<![CDATA[HTC Touch Slide Leaked And In the Wild]]> The HTC Touch Slide, previously known as the HTC Nike—is the slide-out version of the HTC Touch we reviewed back in June. On the inside, there's 3G HSDPA, 400MHz processor, 2-megapixel camera, and a microSD expansion slot.

On the outside, where it's interesting, is a SureType keyboard that allows much, much faster text input than the crappy stylus/screen combo that the HTC Touch had to suffer with before. Not much other detail other than this, but Modaco seems to think the phone is going to be officially launched on Monday.

Although the slide-out keyboard will make this phone usable for normal people who really don't want to dig around a Windows Mobile touchscreen interface to do anything—which believe us, is very painful—it's not quite enough to bring it up to level of usability that say, an iPhone has. [Modaco]

<![CDATA[Sidekick Users Getting MySpace App]]> If you thought Helio was the only handheld device to have a dedicated MySpace app, think again. T-Mobile and Danger are planning to roll out a Sidekick MySpace app that lets you upload pics, edit profiles and do many of the things kids used to sneak into Apple stores for for.

Sidekick 3 and Sidekick iD users will be able to grab it, and the Sidekick Slide (a.k.a. Zante) will get this installed by default.

<![CDATA[Sidekick 4 and Sidekick Slide?]]> Boy Genius and Engadget got their hands on some renders from Danger that seem to be the upcoming Sidekick 4 and Sidekick Slide. The Slide, seen in a domain registered by T-Mobile, looks to be fatter than the regular Sidekick 4/Sidekick 3 we've seen before.

The Sidekick 4, if these renders are correct, has a wide screen that fills out the entirety of the middle section, and pretty much keeps the same-ish face buttons as the 3. But with great messengers like the Helio Ocean upping the ante for QWERTY phones, what's the next gen going to bring to the table that we haven't already seen?

<![CDATA[Awesome Tube Slide Should Replace Stairs]]> Who needs stairs? They're so last century. If I had my druthers, going up a floor in a building would be done via escalator, and going down would be done via slide. Giant tube slides, to be exact. You might think it's impractical, but that would just mean that you've murdered your inner child.

The folks at the Tate Modern Art Gallery in London have very healthy inner children, fortunately. They've gone ahead and installed gigantic tube slides that run from the top of the building all the way to the ground floor. When I get around to building my own home, you can bet that I'm gonna be installing something very similar.

They've even got a conference table that looks like a ping pong set...
