If the Pre was competing against phones from a couple years ago, they'd be flying high right now. But with iPhone and Android running around, plus the strong incumbent RIM, it's going to be an uphill battle for Palm no matter how great their OS is.

@redman042: Palm are struggling to find relevance in a highly competitive market. They were deluding themselves when they thought the Pre would topple the iPhone and the whole attack mentality they had against the iPhone has come and royally bitten them on the ass. They are competing against Blackberry who have the business market pretty much sewn up, Apple that have the "cool" factor and Android, which appears to be on every non RIM, Palm and Apple smartphone these days.

T-Mobile point-blank refused to sell me a MyTouch when I re-upped my contract this summer. "It won't be available until fall or winter, sir, but we do carry the G1!"

I've been deciding how to use their failure as leverage, and this seems as compelling a reason as any.

@veronykah: The phone was available for pre-order at the time I renewed. The next week it was available to buy outright. I just got my usual serving of Institutional Customer Service, that's all.

I used to apply your logic - after the contract lapses, let the phone go month-to-month until there's a compelling reason to renew. Unfortunately every telco I've done that with has used small print charges to suck my wallet dry the moment I go off-contract. Maybe they don't do that anymore, but I've been burned the same way by more than one company over the years so it's no longer my approach.

T-Mobile hadn't screwed up a thing in our first two years, so I didn't anticipate a problem. But then the company I chose to reward with my loyalty promptly lied about the product I asked for and royally mangled the renewed contract on top of it. Sorry T-Mobile, you fucked up the second I took you off probation. For that I will twist your arm for perks and walk if I don't get what I want - family members have recently come into corporate discounts that would save me money anyway.

There's other creatures besides men and God....there's...well, there's nephilim. And cherubim...I mean, did anyone ever ask Gabriel when Jesus and/or the Nexus One is arriving? I mean, not that he'd tell you, but he could know....

All I'm saying is that there is a remote possibility that Google is a supernatural entity ranking with the sacred caretakers and defenders of God's divine message to mankind that may or may not possess, among other pieces of knowledge, Jesus Christ's second coming itinerary.

    @lankysob: Seconded.

Don't get me wrong, I love my keyboard. And if I can't hang on to my G1 to still have the option, then no deal (plus I'm not keen on extending my contract). But this phone actually looks just beautiful enough, and has all the right hardware (read: Snapdragon) to make for a very fine phone indeed. Maybe, just maybe, worth trying to adapt to going keyboardless.

@Hosemaster: It's a little bit more than $35 to terminate my contract with T-Mo this early (still in my first year). But rest assured, once that contract is up, I'll be staying out for as long as I can. T-Mobile's contract-less plans are looking good, and if Google can help push along the no-contract style, I'm thinking by the time 2011 rolls around, with a little luck I might not need to.

    Other carriers: follow suit, ok?

@OCEntertainment: I know I'm a little late in replying (was out of the office), but you sound exactly like I do about my phone: married to the keyboard, not married to the contract. The lack of keyboard is what has kept me away from the iPhones of the world thus far. This T-Mobile "no contract" contract however, is intriguing. I wasn't aware that they did that. Is it's just a more sophisticated pay-as-you go plan that includes data?

On the other hand, my G1 lately has been dropping calls, hanging data connections causing me to long ago turn off any kind of syncing (it basically is useless) - so essentially I have a dumb phone in a smart phone's body. I don't know if T-Mob's 3G coverage hit the fan recently (I'm in Baltimore- home of the world's first WiMax connection, of all places), or if my rooted Cyanogen mod is just old and sluggish.......hence my thinking of jumping back to the evil VZ for the Droid. But, if what you say about these contractless plans is true - and this phone comes to T-Mob - they just might keep me, despite the lack of a keyboard on this thing. I am also 1 year into a 2 year contract, so I'll also be interested to find out more about these mysterious no contract plans. Thanks for alerting me of them, hopefully I can get out of my last year of contract as well.

@lankysob: I'm on stock Android (unrooted), but I actually had the same data hanging issue, too. It turns out is was my calendar, which I use sparingly, so I was able to turn that off and still get emails. You may try that.

And for the contract thing, check into what Hosemaster said. I looked it up and it seems that you can "migrate" to the new Even More Plus plan for a $35 fee if you're into your second year. Some places I read indicated you'd still get charged a fee if you left the month-to-month plan before your 2 years was up, but this may just be due to some improperly trained reps during the transition.

Anyways, best of luck with it.

@OCEntertainment: In case you hadn't found this already, in this CNET article they reference the existence of an "Equipment Installment Plan" in conjunction with the Even More/Even More Plus plans allowing you to spread out the cost of your phone into monthly payments (since you're removing yourself from the plan-controlled, subsidized phone world). Good news that might put me in the market for the Nexus One a whole year before I was expecting to be.

@Jstick: Yeah, it says available through Google on the 5th with subsidized plans for agreeing to a T-Mo contract. My hope - HOPE, because it's not confirmed - is that existing T-Mobile users will be able to upgrade to the device with a contract renewal at that time.

If T-Mobile were to bungle that aspect of it, I'd be severely disappointed.

@Jstick: The original article does say that, though it does not say that it won't be available from T-Mo on the 5th either. The question then becomes is there a reason why they would stagger the release dates?

That being said, I can't wait for January 5th, either (screw you, New Year's). I just want to know what the unsubsidized price is. Also, this "commission" is an interesting angle I don't think anyone's brought up before. Buy a Nexus One, take it to T-Mobile, T-Mobile pays Google a bit of change for getting them a new customer. Interesting idea, indeed.

@speaknspell23: Yeah, I'm not sure of the exact timeframe, but I've been with them for 8 years now, and I'm about two years out of my last upgrade. They usually throw deals my way - the last time I upgraded, I got two full upgrades within three months for "loyalty."

It's easy to play the game with wireless companies, for the most part. I don't imagine I'll have any problems getting this one at full upgrade.
