    @dry-roasted-peanuts: Right on. I used to have an iPhone and now I have a Virgin Mobile Rumor2 with the texter's delight plan. I spend about 20 bucks a month on the thing.

    Sometimes I miss my iPhone but I never liked the bill considering how rarely I spoke on the phone. I'm more of a texter.

    Or people can leave a message and I'll call 'em when I get home using Skype for $2.99 a month unlimited.

    I'm a cheap bastard.

    I don't get this recent obsession with the total cost of ownership of cell phones. Yes, you have to have a plan from the phone company--on every phone you could buy.

    Feel free to compare the plans against each other, see what you're spending each month, and make a good decision.

    Adding the price of the phone plus 2 years of phone bills is confusing and misleading and doesn't really represent the way you'll be paying your bills or budgeting.

    @dtemp: No, because the cost of the phone and the cost of the plan are really 2 different things, and combining them just makes the purchase confusing.

    @lostarchitect: But not all plans are available on all phones, so while it might increase your confusion, it's the only honest comparison available. I can't walk into AT&T and buy an iPhone without a data plan. So that phone is $30/month more than any other phone I'd be interested in right out of the gate.

    @ATimson: well, for me I look at it like this.

    Almost all plans are 2 years long, so calculating the cost over 2 years just inflates the number to something I can't relate to my actual budget, which is monthly (as is the budget of most people).

    So first I think, "if I get the plan I want, how much does it cost me per month?".

    If that's affordable, then I think, "OK, how much do I have to give up front to get the phone I want?"

    Then I compare those 2 numbers to other providers and phones to find something I can afford and that does what I need. It just makes more sense that way.

    Maybe because you're still locked into a contract for all of eternity?

    Why can't they do Black Friday deals for unsubsidized phones? I'm sure a lot of people - including myself - would go out and buy, say, an unsubsidized Palm Pixi if they shaved, say $100 off the price for Black Friday.

    (Why, you ask? I'm looking for a cheap CDMA smartphone for prepaid. Namely a Pixi. And I'd like to get into WebOS developing, so yeah, a cheap Pixi would be nice.)

    @dragon:ONE: I think your prepaid example is the only reason i can see wanting to buy an unsubsidized phone.

    You are going to need a service provider anyway, and they arent going to cut you a deal if you bring your own phone. What you are going to get is a phone that is really expensive, and then the same deal that you would have gotten from the carrier for your plan. Sure it wont be on contract, but if you just bought say an HTC phone for 800 bucks, you bet your ass you are going to want to use it for at least 2 years.

    So basically you are paying 3x the price for the phone and the same price for the plan. Smart. The only benefit is you can cancel any time, but then you have a 800$ paper weight, until you sign up with another carrier.

    @Eulatos: You can easily fling that paperweight on eBay depending on model.

    I know enough LG Neons people are listing for upwards of $200 or so when they're all of $100 at Walmart/Radio Shack/etc on GoPhone prepaid.

    @dragon:ONE: Aye you can, but you are then losing money while trying to save money. And you could do the same thing with your subsidized phone, and having only payed say 200 for it and sell it for 500 which is still 300 under the going rate.

    @Kaiser-Machead: But when year 2 rolls around and you dont cancel, you have paid $1700. You arent gaining anything by not being on contract. If you want to use your phone you are still obligated to pay tmobile for that ability.

    they're called cops, and you should drive away from them as fast as possible whenever you see one. it also helps if you make a lot of fast turns in the process while still taking into account the locations of any nearby cherries when formulating your route.
