We all jumped on it after the head of Intel Germany made some cryptic (and perhaps poorly translated) comments. He was talking about types of gadgets, not specific gadgets. Sadly, we'll probably have to wait a little longer for this particular Jobsian riff. [I4U; Apple 2.0]

<![CDATA[ Hulk Smash Electronic Fists: 1-Minute Catfight and Review ]]> Clearly super-hero season is full on at this point, and the product is already in stores. Hasbro sent us two pairs of $20 Hulk Smash electronic action-sensitive talking fists. These are different from the old ones because a) they're made by Hasbro, not Toy Biz b) are cloth, not foam and c) have one speaker, not two. We still have to wait a little over a month for the Hulk movie, though, provided Ed Norton doesn't chain himself to the outgoing prints to keep the world from seeing it. (Yep, that slow-mo comes from the beloved Casio EX-F1.) [Video by Nick McGlynn Hasbro]

<![CDATA[ Nokia to Apple: Blah Blah iPhone Killer Blah Blah You Suck ]]> Nokia said they didn't care about the iPhone back when it was introduced, not even commented on it beyond a brief "smeh." Then, they presented their iPhone killer concept, a demo that looked and acted exactly like Apple's handset, even while it was "no competition for Nokia." Now they have announced they are "readying" the final product, code-named Tube. They showed it yesterday, while pooh-poohing on His Steveness' toy:

"We've done that [volume] since we've had dinner on Friday."

That SteveBallmerism was pulled out of his hat by Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, talking about iPhone's sales, apparently forgetting that taller giants have fallen after similar words. Specially when he is conveniently ignoring that Apple's record volume is just one non-subsidized model that competes with your top of the line—handsets like the Nokia N95 and the N96—in just a handful of countries (and for the longest period of its lifetime, in only one market, which is not as big when it comes to mobiles like Europe or Asia.)

Now, it's not that we don't think Nokia's Tube can't be a great success or that Nokia is in a bad position at all. They are clearly the NĂºmero Uno, without a doubt, and for all we know, Tube could be the best thing since either the iPhone itself or the Beamz. However, publicly smashing a newcomer, a still small and young player in the cellphone market, doesn't give credibility to Nokia, as the incumbent player: it gives credibility to the new kid on the block, who doesn't only look smarter and cooler to the general consumer, but now also looks like a clear and present danger to the Finnish company.

And while all that happens in a single quote, there's just a slide to show about Tube and still no planned date for shipment. [Inforworld]

<![CDATA[ Cyber Smash Grip Add-on Turns Wiimotes Into DualShocks ]]> Despite the supposedly game-changing motion controls that the Wii brings to gaming, a good portion of AAA games use the Wiimote in the more traditional controller sense. How do you make the one-handed controller more comfortable for two handed play? By shoving it inside a body that adds an "analog" stick and two DualShock-like grips. And when you're done making Snake do sexy things to Samus, it comes off for easy storage. [Cyber Gadget via Impress via Nintendo Wii Fanboy]

<![CDATA[ Raytheon Blaster Can Smash Through Concrete Juggernaut Style ]]> A new prototype device developed by Raytheon Co. can bash through concrete walls like nobody's business. Plans for the 100 pound Controlled Impact Rescue Tool, or CIRT, will place the device in the hands of firefighters, military personnel and search teams as part of a program developed by the Department of Homeland Security. Hit the jump to see the CIRT in action.

The video above pretty much says it all, but to put things into perspective, the CIRT can take down a concrete barrier in about 13 minutes—which is about 16 minutes quicker than conventional methods. That may be a little slower than Juggernaut, but it is not too shabby. Plus, it is not much of a burden for two burly dudes to handle. A price point for the device has yet to be determined. [Boston]

<![CDATA[ Crystal Icing Give Mario, Bowser SwaroskWii Treatment ]]> Crystal Icing is back with two more additions to their Swarovski encrusted Wii range. They previously bought us the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess edition, which looked remarkable. Well, they are obviously onto a winning formula; just checkout the new Super Smash Bros Brawl inspired Wii / Swarovski overkill artworks. Sure, they are excessive, but we have always wanted to see what Bowser looked like when he's all blinged out by 20,000 crystals. If you have had similar queries about Mario, jump in to put your curiosities aside.

Mario%20Crystal%20Icing%20GI.jpgYeah, we wouldn't mind having these Wii sets beneath our TV, but we'd much rather keep the $4,000 in our pocket. [Crystal Icing; Thanks, James.]

<![CDATA[ Exclusive Video: Flat Flexible OLED Screen Survives Hammer Pounding ]]> What happens when you smash a super-thin OLED display with a hammer? Last week, Wilson and I learned all about OLEDs, but after our factory tour we were left with that one nagging question. Lucky for us, mystery solved, as UDC has the answer courtesy of this video demonstration. Personally, I'd like to see this test performed on more gadgets. Blending is getting a little old. [UDC]

<![CDATA[ German Chicks in Bikinis Smashing Gadgets ]]> You have to have a certain special kind of fetish to enjoy watching German ladies in bikinis destroy gadgets with a scowl on their face, but if anyone fits the bill, we're sure they're in our readership.

These sets of videos belong to Bikinirama, three German ladies that enjoy swimwear and destroying electronics equally. The video above shows them demolishing a PowerBook, but there's monitors, CD players and record players as well. No ball breaking, but that's probably more of a hobby than something they need to be paid for.

<![CDATA[ Format War Non-News and Rumor Smash: Wal-Mart Didn't Order 2M HD DVD Players ]]> Remember those rumors that Wal-Mart was going big in HD DVD and ordering 2 million cheapo Chinese HD DVD players? Yeah, that's not so true. Fuh Yuan, the company supposedly taking the orders, just posted a correction regarding the orders, saying they "had not received yet." Wal-Mart just asked them for a cost analysis and timing appraisal, and may choose them to provide the players if everything looks dandy. Did you know Fuh yuan is supposedly, according to a translation in AVS forums, going to IPO soon? Convenient.

Wal-Mart itself said they can't comment on whether there was a deal brewing, but did say they plan to sell both Blu-ray and HD DVD until one of them sucks slightly less than the other.

In more non-news, we called it that Blu-ray would only be winning for another 5 minutes before HD DVD threw a statistic in their favor across the wires. To the Blu-ray's millions of discs sold, HD DVD is actually at 998,059, just 2,000 units of Blu-ray's million disc march.

That's why I call it non news.

<![CDATA[ Rumor Smashed: iTunes Card NOT Free With Zune ]]> Yesterday we posted a Weird Combo of the Day that offered a $15 iTunes card free with the purchase of a Zune. Later, we even had a "tip" from a CompUSA "employee" with a "screenshot" of an internal "memo" referencing the "incident" about the "deal" and yes I like "quotes".

Zune Insider followed up on the rumor.

I talked to the retail team; this is a hoax. The actual ad that ran offered a $15 iTunes gift card with the purchase of an iPod, and free Zune Premium Earphones w/ the purchase of a Zune... Funny while it lasted, though!
Yeah, it really was. But for now, RUMOR (...that we sorta helped start) SMASHED!

UPDATE: Ok...maybe it wasn't smashed. I don't know what to believe anymore But I'm gonna sleep alright tonight nonetheless.

<![CDATA[ Rumor Smashed: Apple has NOT Released The 802.11n Update For Free ]]> Remember how Apple was going to charge $1.99 for the 802.11n AirPort enabler in Intel macs? Well, Apple released an Airport Extreme firmware update for all Intel-based Macs yesterday, and already sites are claiming Apple's gone and lowered $1.99 to $0.00. Not quite.

An Apple contact confirmed for us that the update is not the AirPort Extreme enabler, and just updates Intel Macs for compatibility with AirPort Extreme base stations. A bit of wishful thinking never hurt anyone, but let's not jump to conclusions unless you have that cool mat from Office Space.

<![CDATA[ Asurion's Cellphone Insurance Works - Even For Idiots ]]> What's with bloggers and anger management issues? First Kotaku's Crecente smashes the wall with his fist while installing Windows, now Consumerist's Popken smashes his cellphone with his fist while being retarded. Good thing the Poppers had Asurion, which took his claim even when confessed to manually smashing the phone in anger.

So yes, Ben got a new phone with just at $50 deductible and a trip down to the Verizon store. We've usually skimped on cellphone insurance—mostly because we get our phones unlocked from overseas—but how about readers? Has your Asurion experience been as good, or are you one of the victims we hear about that warns us that it's easier NOT to buy insurance and spare yourself the headache?

<![CDATA[ Mario and Luigi Smash Up the Wii ]]>
If you thought the PS3 was the only console these guys were gonna smash, think again. Dressed up as Mario and Luigi, the sledgehammer-toting duo gave a brand new Wii the beating of its life in front of a line of Nintendo fanboys. Unlike the previous Wii autopsy we showed you, these guys took out all their aggression on the tiny console. The video is worth a chuckle especially with the Mario Bros. sound effects running in the background, though it woulda been a lot cooler had they destroyed the Wii by spitting fireballs at it.
