When your iPod goes "up in smoke," at least it won't mean an emergency trip to the Genius Bar.

A Lego Technic Motor was attached to a Jensen #75 steam engine to make a crude generator. He then added a 5V regulator circuit and soldered a female USB connection. He also added some circuit protection. It even looks like a cute little rest stop on the Oregon Trail before you had to dump all that leftover buffalo meat you shot into the river (sigh, what a waste.) He should remember though that water, heat and electronics usually don't mix or he might end up taking the pony express to the nearest Apple store. [Boing Boing Gadgets]

<![CDATA[SLAM Helmet Maps Room to Help Rescuers Navigate Through Smoke]]> Researchers are using a technique called simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) to develop helmets that rescue workers can use to navigate through heavy smoke. The helmet features an infrared laser scanner and software that bounces signals off walls and uses that data to create a map of the surrounding area.

The software also filters out variables like swaying and head-bobbing that could confuse the signal. Obviously, this technology is a long way from being implemented in the real world (as you can see from the crude helmet pictured here), but I can see how it could be a big help to rescue workers if some sort of monitor was added to the helmet or it was integrated into a handheld device. <![CDATA[Smoke Turret Will Make You King of the Party (Through Force if Necessary) ]]> Quite simply, the Smoke Turret is the most dangerous-looking fog machine on the market. Five feet tall and swiveling 180-degrees on its tripod base, the turret's six barrels utilize a 90psi air compressor to fire smoke for up to 15 feet. On top of that, a strobe light is concealed in the gun sight for a little extra firepower to get the party started. Still, what's the $2,400 Smoke Turret do that a normal fog machine can't? It makes you look like a total badass, that's what. The guitar that he's strumming on not-so-convincingly is the ChroniCaster, a bulletproof plexiglass little number, complete with bong add-on for those whose motto is Fumo, Ergo Sum. I think this is all a ploy to publicize Edison's new book, entitled I Like Words So Much I'm Going to Give My Autobiography a Mahoosive Title So That Everyone Will Get Tired of Reading It and Just Go Out And Buy It. Hello? Is Anyone There? Please Come Back, I'm Stoned and Paranoid. No, it's called I Have Fun Everywhere I Go: Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, American Heroes, and the Most Notorious Magazines in the World. Now, someone get him a glass of water. [YouTube via Boing Boing]

<![CDATA[Solar Lighter: A Greener Way to Smoke]]> Like some kind of tiny parabolic burning mirror that would make Archimedes proud, this solar lighter captures the sun's rays and focuses them to a central spot that can reach 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Result: an economic, fossil-fuel-free way to light your smelly cigarettes. If that's not ironic enough, today is World Cancer Day! Let's just call it a "survival tool" instead, and say it's just an environmentally graceful way to, uh, start forest fires. [Shiny Shiny]
