and newsflash, doing anything besides driving, while driving, is distracting. plenty of accidents are caused by people adjusting their radios while driving, but i don't see a nationwide ban on car radios approaching.
@lostlikeme: you're right, there is no way to enforce it....until something happens. If a gov't employee is in an accident and it's shown that they were texting to cause the accident, then they will get in huge trouble, most likely fired.
@FrancesTheMute: Yep. Or if the employee is in a marked government vehicle and someone sees them texting I would imagine they could call and report it.
@GitEmSteveDave_@Gmail.comNeedsAWaveInvite: He doesn't need to text, its got bluetooth and voice recognition that makes all his texts sound like they're being sent from Morgan Freeman.
paranoid much? Texting while driving is a state level issue and will not be made at the national level.
At the very most it will be the equivelent of the drinking age being essentially mandated because those states w/o a drinking age of 21 would not get federal interstate $$$$$
"As usual, the face of Emmanuel Goldstein, the Enemy of the People, had flashed onto the screen. There were hisses here and there among the audience. The little sandy-haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust." (Orwell)
How can you tell if someone is making or reading a text message? It will be difficult to control this. People should not be holding phones in their hands while they are driving, period.
Interesting, Yes probably good that people dont text and drive. But, Just another invasion of personal rights. Next up, a RFID chip in your skin to prove you enrolled in state run healthcare. Scary times people. wake up.
@simplegreen: I can barely handle this communist garbage any more. NoBama has been lying to us since the get go, we all know that he is a secret Kenyan Muslim.
@simplegreen: Interesting, Yes probably good that people dont fire guns in random directions in suburban areas. But, Just another invasion of personal rights. Next up, a RFID chip in your skin to prove you enrolled in state run healthcare. Scary times people. wake up.
@thePrototype: Communist Russia had cellphones with texting capabilities? Holy crap. They were 20 years ahead of us. What other gadget marvels did the Ruskies have on us?
@simplegreen: Its an order saying that government employees can't text while driving in government cars. Its no different than any other employer saying its employees can't text while driving company cars.
@Diddle my Skittles: You know what else they had... Death Panels, if we let Big Government into our healthcare, they are going to force the elderly and sick before Death Panels.
@McMonahan: the day i could afford to pay my own bills and i lived in america.. same day typing on a web site whatever you feel you want to say became a right.
@simplegreen: Since driving is not a right, how can texting while driving be a right?
Personal liberties do not exist so that you can put people in danger.
And as stated this is no different than drinking and driving laws or say; working head lights, the requirement to use blinkers, yielding to pedestrians, speed limits, driving too close, racing on public roads, stopping at stop signs, stopping at red lights, going at green lights. So, logically you are also against all of those things and they are all tyranny and stealing your liberties and freedoms.
This works for me! Since my girlfriend left Big Red for an iPhone we've had to increase our txt packages. Now we can reduce those and use this during the day, when I have wifi on my Touch.
Perhaps I'm missing the point of this app, but texts are sent/received typically pretty much instantly, within a few seconds give or take (yes they can be delayed, but for the most part are not), and they also pop up with a notification if I'm not actively using my phone...
@ColonelGentleman: Yeah, but so does a data plan. And if you can only use this app with people who also have the app, chances are you'll still end up paying for a text plan for everyone who doesn't have an iPhone.
Not discounting your point, it still seems that for the hassle of remembering which of your contacts has an iPhone with this app and those who don't and require regular texting would not only defeat the simplicity of both IM'ing and SMS, but also the money you are trying to save...
Reminds me of Google Talk on Android, except that all Android users have it automatically set up by default without downloading an app and it can also communicate with people who use Google Talk on other devices.
I guess most people are probably more likely to know iPhone owners than Android owners, but I'm in the unique position where 8 out of my 10 most frequently communicated with friends all have Android so it works out pretty conveniently.
