<![CDATA[Palm Pre's WebOS 1.2 Goes Live]]> The 1.2 update just hit, and it's got a massive changelog to go with it. Among the more interesting changes are the new cellular download capability of Amazon MP3, and the ability to download a purchased app again for free.

What it doesn't do is open the door for paid apps in the App Catalog, which is still coming soon. You can now enter in your credit card info in case you can't wait that extra two minutes to buy apps when it does come.

There are also Bluetooth car kit compatibility improvements, Calendar tweaks, better email searching and photo syncing w/o using the original full-resolution files. The massive list of all the changes is over at Palm. [Palm via Prethinking]

<![CDATA[Palm Pre 1.0.4 Update Kills Homebrew, Patches Security Holes]]> The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. The 1.0.4 update for the Palm Pre just got released, but along with patching some security holes, kills the homebrew ability that made everyone so excited.

Why, Palm, when your SDK isn't available until late summer, would you go and patch the homebrew? At the very least, developers have the leaked SDK to work off of, even if it's not final. [Palm via Engadget]

<![CDATA[Snow Leopard Update Comes Via Software Update, Adds Dock Expose]]> The new developer's Snow Leopard build, build 10A394, is interesting in that you don't have to reinstall your entire OS to get it—you can just grab it via Software Update.

Dock Expose finally shows up as well. The OS is pretty stable for everyday use (minus plugins and some apps that don't quite work), so if you're adventurous and don't mind having incompatibilities for some stuff, you can probably find this online somewhere. [Gear Live]

<![CDATA[Palm Pre webOS 1.0.3 Update Improves Syncing, Power Performance]]> The 1.0.3 update to your Palm Pre doesn't add any new apps, but it does fix a few things in Gmail, Contacts and Calendar syncing. Here's the changelog:

Feature changes to existing applications
Calendar

* Events created in your Google calendar-either in Calendar on your phone or in Google online-that contain a symbol or accented character in the event name can now synchronize. Previously, including a symbol or accented character in an event name prevented the event from synchronizing.
* Changes made to Google events on the phone now sync with Google online within a few minutes.
* The sync interval for Google events has been decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.

Clock

* If you create a weekday alarm on a weekend, the alarm sounds only on weekdays. Previously the alarm would sound on the weekend also.

Contacts

* Changes made to Google contacts on the phone now sync with Google online within a few minutes.
* The sync interval for Google contacts has been decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.

Email

* Power performance in areas where wireless coverage is sporadic or unavailable has been enhanced.
* Non-SSL Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) mail servers are now supported.

Other

* Miscellaneous updates for Email, Phone, and other applications.

<![CDATA[Apple Should Learn a Few Things From the Zune Software Upgrades]]> Do you remember how Microsoft gave first-gen Zune users all the features that could be properly implemented via software update? Apple should be doing this for the iPhone 3G.

Let's look at what's new in the iPhone 3GS. Magnetometer for the compass, an improved camera, video recording, voice control, faster processor, faster 3G and and a 32GB storage bump. Obviously, we're not talking about the hardware stuff (processor, camera, etc.), but the software things like voice control and video recording? That could easily have been ported to the 3G.

Apple's official reason was that the iPhone 3G doesn't have enough power to run those two features. Really? They're saying that on-the-fly voice control (albeit one that doesn't just match what you say to a pre-recorded sample on your voice) can't be done on the iPhone 3G? You mean the same feature that's been available for Windows Mobile FIVE phones for about half a decade now? This can't be done with the iPhone 3G's processor?

And there's the question of video recording. Check out the video below.

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. This was taken on the iPhone 3G with the Cycorder Cydia jailbreak app. As in, you can do this right now if you jailbreak your phone and install the app. And this is a jailbreak app that doesn't have as great access to the phone as Apple's own internal team with their first-party video libraries. The 7-15FPS of Cydia isn't as good as the 30FPS of Apple's own recording on the 3GS, but it's not bad either. It's something.

So yeah, we're not asking for the impossible here. We just want for Apple to let actual hardware upgrades be the reason for people to upgrade to the 3GS, not for them to have arbitrary software distinctions to separate their products. [Gizmodo's WWDC Coverage and Roundup]

<![CDATA[Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update Comes in November]]> Microsoft's just gone on the record with RPG-TV and said the Fall Xbox 360 Dashboard Update will be hitting in November, which technically is still a part of Fall. Previous updates have also been released in late November (as close to Winter as you could push it while still being Fall), but all those new features coming this time might be cause for delay, even though they skipped the Spring update for this reason. Grab it now from iTunes (unless of course you want to be careful and not update to new firmwares right away).

<![CDATA[iPhone Developers Get Push Notification API]]> Apple's just seeded the push notification API to developers through the second beta release of the iPhone 2.1 firmware. What this means to you is that developers can now tailor their apps to receive notifications in the background while it's not running, something supremely useful for apps like AIM, and to a lesser extent, Twitter and other social networking apps. The target date back at WWDC for when you'd get your hands on the background notification was September, which seems right seeing as developers need a month or so to integrate it and then get their apps approved. Now *bling* you can *bling* always *bling* know when someone *bling* is trying to *bling* get ahold of you. *bling* [Apple Insider]
