I still really want one but the price and the waiting on it is preventing me from ordering one; maybe once I can just buy it and get it right away! My mom just bought one through for herself for Christmas (should arrive in Feb) so I will get to see if I really want my own then!
@hbuzzell: As a Giz reader, I'm surprised you want something so limited in its functionality. My Viliv X70 arrives tomorrow and it has so much more functionality; with Windows XP, 32G SSD, GPS and optional 3G it can also surf, read RSS feeds, play 720p movies, run productivity apps like PIMs, etc. etc.
I just sold my Sony eReader to defray the cost somewhat!
Closer in cost to the Nook, the Lighthouse SQ7 would also be a better deal I think, but I don't think anyone's gotten a DRM enabled eBook reader on it yet.
@brianmi40: As a giz reader, I'm surprised you want something so limited in functionality. My Macbook Pro is in my hands right now and has so much more functionality; with OS 10.6.2, 640GB SATA, GPS and 802.11N/ gigabit ethernet, along with a backlit keyboard, crisp 13" screen, 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, I can surf, read RSS feeds, play 1080p movies, run productivity apps like Microsoft Office, etc. etc.
I just sold my child to defray the cost somewhat!
It sounds kinda stupid when i say it, doesn't it.
hm.
If hbuzzel wants to buy something, I'd say stop berating them and just let them be satisfied with what they get
@brianmi40: I am saving my money for my new laptop to buy in the summer and currently read books on my laptop now but unfortunately my current laptop and my new laptop and it's 17" monitor will not fit in my small purse when I am going somewhere and would like to have a book with me (and reading books on my Blackberry and my iPod, which I also can do right now, is starting to get harder to do since my eyes are not so great any more). But thanks for the criticism!
@hbuzzell: It wasn't a criticism in any way, just a question.
Behind it perhaps lies an open question to Giz's populace: do readers prefer their gadgets in greater numbers (e.g. having one of each tuned to its function), or, fewer in number with a greater set of functions (tradeoff being often that they don't do some of them well).
My comment was intended only to indicate that I favor the Swiss Army Knife end of the pool and to give you a chance to confirm that you'll be happy on the other end of the pool. Neither end is intrinsically better; it depends on the person using it.
@brianmi40: I would like to have a laptop that did everything and fit in my purse but unfortunately I need a larger laptop monitor and more laptop features than the little ones provide. I would prefer less toys that do more but overall, I just need stuff that I can use (which for some reason turns out to be separate stuff most of the time).
@RT100: ahh, enter the Mac fanboy. Sorry if you misread mate, but no one was "berating" anyone. I just asked them a question, but hey, thanks for jumpin in.
I almost feel like people would prefer to develop for the iPhone because there is only really one set of hardware, and resolution to worry about. Sure there are slight variations on phone models, but not like the android developing with all different screen types.
@Chambana: on the other hand, developing for android means more freedom, you can use any API you want and you dont have to worry about your app getting denied at the last step.
@Chambana: Different screen types isn't an issue with Android 1.6. Similar to Windows apps, it doesn't matter what size screen/resolution (15" or 28") you're running, the apps scale to fit.
Resolution is easy. hardware is a little more complicated. But if dev's put a "system requirements" (similar to PC games) such as "made for 2.0 or up", or "designed for droid", then bam, problem solved. Most apps aren't hardware dependent, but camera apps and the sort are a different story.

I'm still on the fence about getting a mac. *n00b alert* what's that one that has like the 21" screen with the components built in? I like that one -- or maybe a macbook -- do they ever package them together as a deal?
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: iMac is the one you're thinking about. But yea, if you're a student or just like portable shit period, I'd rather suggest a Macbook or Macbook Pro.
You ever get around to beating MW2? Played it online yet? Multiplayer on that game is my crack cocaine these days...
@TheSonOfKrypton: I finally played around with a MacBook Pro when I went to the Apple store instead of going straight to the iPhones (which I already have...).
All I can say is DAMN. I want one. I just wish they came in a size a little smaller than 13". My laptop is 11.1" and I love the size. The 13" just seems a little bit too big.
But man! It was fast. And so smooth. iTunes runs perfectly on a Mac. I'm getting one next year. And sorry for drifting so far off topic. :]
@TheSonOfKrypton: I beat it on recruit which I don't personally qualify as beating it. Multiplayer online I do like playing. Hit me up with a FR -- SusquehannaGrad
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: The 21 incher is a macbook built into a screen.... meaning there is generally no differences in the innards of the macbook pro and the imac.
I was on the fence about getting my 15 inch macbook pro, but my band was progressing and i decided it would be nice to dabble in audio recording. Logic 9 and the fireport that im using are fantastic.
Go buy a mac... do it... But if you prefer desktops or already have a kick ass lappy, het the 21 inch imac or the massive 27 incher and play your xbox through it rofl
@kthxbai: I have a 2007 model HP laptop -- obviously nothing impressive. I also have a 2004 model Dell PC (bought for college) which after recently having everything rebooted works alright. I have given up on games for PC since I'm quite content with my xbox so my next computer would be just for leisure and the occasional Photoshop project. BTW -- Thanks readers for all the responses/advise! #macpurchase
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: Well, I didnt think the backlit keys on the pro would matter so much, but they kick so much ass. And i prefer the glossy screen on the pro as well. You can occasionally find a sick deal on a pro making it closer to that $1000 pricepoint on the white macbook. Plus firewire is a snazzy extra. -Honestly aside from aesthetics, the differences between the white mac/eggbook are really minimal -firewire, ram max of 4GB on the eggbook, 8GB on the pro...-
Personally I think desktops are a dying breed, and I love my MBP. If you can go buy one RIGHT NOW and love its backlit keyboard-y goodness. Later in 2010 there will probably be an i5 or i7 upgrade in macbook pros and you will really be able to justify upgrading.
Side note- 360 FTFWWWWW!!! I have been on this left for dead 2 binge for two weeks now- ever since that javelin glitch on MW2 got to widespread- but with those two games I have so much re-found love for my 360. I would PS3 bash, but I would rather not start a flame war with Son of Krypton. =]
So if you use Microsoft EFS, law enforcement can crack it, but you could lose all your encrypted files anyway if your profile corrupts or someone breaks into your PC with a password changer... but if you use TrueCrypt or something like that, they're just left asking "What the hell is C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\EIO31462.DLL and why is it 10 GB?" :p

There's little to no comparison. Why would someone want to use a blackberry or iPhone, when they could get a laptop with skype?
Because the phones excel at their primary function - so does the nook/kindle.

Still want one. Still can't justify the purchase.

1. You need shitty apps so you can have an idea of what a non shitty app feels like.
2. Without quantity in anything, you will never find the diamond in the rough. And nobody likes piles of diamonds.... i mean, um.....

You need to do some fact checking before making claims like this. I'm going to cross post a comment from reddit instead of plagarizing.
What is COFEE?
FTA:
"COFEE includes the following:
at, autorunsc, getmac, handle, hostname, ipconfig, msinfo32, nbstat, net, netdom, netstat, openfiles, psfile, pslist, psloggedon, psservice, pstat, psuptime, quser, route, sc, sclist, showgrps, systeminfo, tasklist, whoami"
Yes, super illegal for the average joe to use netstat.
