Ohh... I really do wish Apple would stop this absurd incremental update strategy, coming out with a new iSomething every few months that's way overpriced. Make a solid piece of hardware, write good software to go with it, and stick with it. And when you do make new hardware and software, support prior hardware with updates, too!

Personal opinion here... it's almost as if Apple is saying, "Well if you're not rich enough to buy our new iSomething, then you're not worthy of technical support or updates."

Do you even OWN a Zune? There are certainly things that v1 isn't able to do but a v2 can (especially in the way of video resolution, tv out resolution, video codec support...)

Out of curiosity, are these the *only* features not making it the iPhone 3G, or is it that the whole iPhone 3.0 won't make it the iPhone 3G?

That is way more lowercase-i's than I am used to typing at once. *breathes*

Though, either way, I'm sure this will tick plenty of people off just fine.

I guess is nice of them to not make you jailbreak your phone to get it though.

But yeah, 3.0 works great on the 3G. I'm using it right now.

amen.

if they were such a "green conscious" company then they would realize that the number of people willing to dump their 3G for the 3GS is going to create a great deal of waste, and buying the new ones will create more carbon emissions than if they simple CHARGED $10 for the firmware upgrade to get the more advanced features available.

i love my iphone and i don't want to give her up that fast.. plus i had planned on getting her engraved, but realized i should just wait until they have capped out their ridiculously late-in-the-game upgrades so that i won't want to upgrade again for over 5 years.

@ArcticLotus: I have a hard time believing that anyone is going to just dump their (working) iPhone in the trash because it's not going to get some snazzy new updates. Chances are very good that you can still fetch a good amount of money if you were to sell an unlocked 3G iPhone on ebay. Not everyone is going to be concerned with getting everything the upgrade is getting, and the proof is in the bids.

But Jason, this is not an "arbitrary" distinction. I am sure that it was determined very carefully and deliberately - by Apple's business research department. Technologically arbitrary maybe.

Reasons I'm not getting an iPhone 3GS: 1) I am not a fan of my iPhone 3G and its predilection for crashing; 2) I do not feel like paying the extra $218 on top of the $399 to upgrade (it's not worth $500 to me); 3) I have little to no faith that it will play nice with my office's Exchange server given that my 3G does not play nice with it; 4) I'm not a fan of how Apple treats its customers with the nickle-and-diming when it comes to features. I shouldn't have to pay $29 for an accessory to do something that could very well have been built-in.

So one day, we took in a kitten and we fed the kitten, and everyone loved the kitten and the kitten was sooooo awesome, but then it grew up and it learned lots of neat tricks. Then later we got an even cuter kitten and we taught it better tricks, and we took the old cat and threw it away cuz we figured it wouldn't be able to do the better tricks the new cuter kitten did.

For apple 7-15fps isn't something...Apple doesn't like to release stuff unless it's up to their standards. "Good enough" has never been good enough for them, if it's "good enough" they'll have you do without: it has to be insanely great...yes this is sometimes annoying, but I actually think that more often than not it is beneficial.

Also if they're still selling you a 3G for $99 is it really so wrong to try and create more incentive to upgrade? Well...yeah probably...but you can't claim nobody else does that either!
