These look better than those faux Victorian lamps the city is always putting in to improve the park. They look like they'd have enough power for pedestrian lighting. Perfect for an art park with sculptures and reflecting pools etc.

I think its beautiful, just not exactly practical. Maybe for large "gardens" that people would pay money to go see, but I don't ever see this getting to the commercial world. Meaning for houses, residential, hospitals etc.

    What a fantastic idea.
We need to do this to public areas such as parks, parking lots, etc. which are all exposed to sunlight during the day and then could use the stored up energy to provide safety lighting during the night. Obviously, you'd have backups in-case, but just imagine how much power we could save...

@DPeezy: Hey, I didn't promote, I merely approved. What kind of comment system mutiny is this?
Remember Giz commenting system, this is symbiotic. You keep me happy, post my comments, be nice, I promise I won't find your server and smash you.

@Duckspwn_Insignificant Commenter: ouch, the Giz commenting system biting the "star" hand that feeds it. Craziness.

I still find it odd that my individual comment can be approved, yet overall, as a user, I'm not approved for commenting...

@DPeezy: Hm, that is odd, you must be approved by now, since your reply came up nice and not red. And I can't quite tell if there should be a /sarcasm somewhere in your post... my sarcaso-meter is malfunctioning today.

@Duckspwn: No, there was no sarcasm, just perhaps some cynicism - apparently misplaced as I'm now properly approved (it wasn't showing up for me before). Just took a bit, and 2 approved/promoted posts in this newfangled system...

    Thanks & cheers.

It's only a matter of time before they install a seriously overpriced version of this somewhere in NYC.

Reminds me of an Erasure concert.

    But slightly less penis-y.

For about the same price you could get something like the Eton FR150, which charges via solar or crank and has a radio, a flashlight, and most importantly it has a USB port for powering your USB cupwarmer/clock.
