meanwhile I can get 1TB in a 4.3 x 3.2 x .6in package from Western Digital for less than the 64GB. I also don't get the point of external SSD. with USB, you loose the benefit of the speed and just have the shock protection. I love platters.

OWC -- great products, great service, and reasonably priced. Their website is bland (at best), but they are a peripherals company... what do you expect?

@portugee11: Agreed, I have gotten great service from them, excellent company. I'm glad Newegg is there for cheap stuff but OWC is the place to go for quality gear that (normally) doesn't cost too much. This SSD thing is unreasonable tho.

@Fuji-kun: SSD= No Moving Parts. No heads to crash, and no spinning platters to suck battery power. It will read and write flawlessly even if you're riding a pogo stick through an earthquake.

It is, essentially, the future of storage technology. A few years ago when capacities were still quite small and prices were higher than a crack whore, pundits claimed HDDs wouldn't get replaced for a long, long time to come. However, the pace at which SSD technology is advancing would seem to indicate that they will be overtaking HDD technology within just about a year. HDDs will go the way of the 3.5" floppy as you see them getting put it only budget systems, like $300 advertising 10 TBs of HDD storage because they can't give the HDDs away. Meanwhile laptops, gaming systems and such will have 1 to 2 TBs SSD standard.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see, within 3 years, that Microsoft releases their OS on an SSD that you drop in and it auto-configures.

i want it if it's 50 bucks. that's all i can afford right now.

but seriously, this thing is gonna be expensive. I remember buying my 750GB HD for over 300 bucks just a year ago. Now I can get a 1TB drive for $99.99 (the penny counts).

Give it a few years, they'll be cheaper than a crack whore on a diet...a drug diet. ZING!

I know what you mean. I paid $50 for my 1GB flash drive a few years ago.

@Delta_One: Same. When I purchased my first multistage interplanetary space vehicle, loosely based on Apollo era tech, it cost me well into the billions in 2009 dollars and took forever to get anywhere. Today, I'm able to travel from Andromeda to the Magellanic Cloud at a fraction of the cost and time. Three cheers for progress!

How is that "cheaty"? Isn't it essentially replicating RAID for increased performance?

We have come a long way since the Commodore 1541 days. We can forgive the Micron demonstration involving their own take on the "FastLoad" cartridge.

It's a very good STEC brand SDD too.

There are others out there, but not all have the good specs that these do.

I never thought I'd have a system with a SSD so soon!

My Mini 9 has been a great performer.

@strider_mt2k: Yeah that was gonna be my main concern. Especially since it looks like it's got Vista in the background. From reviews on Newegg it seems that the amount of disk contention vista creates causes some SSD's actually freeze and lock up for up to 20 seconds when users start multitasking. I saw someone with one of these in a meeting a few weeks ago and it definitely looked nice.

@Joseph: It looks like the OS installs Dell do leave a bit of room for performance tweaking as well.
