A Sony spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the company had no plans right now to give you another deal on the machine, and anyone hoping for that kind of news at Leipzig will be sorely disappointed. Given that they slashed the price less than a year ago, this shouldn't be too surprising. Though PS3 sales are still trailing behind the Wii, it's relatively recent discount put it neck to neck for second place with the cheaper Xbox 360. [Reuters]

<![CDATA[ Telegraph Says Scientists Excited by Future of Gaming Platforms ]]> Powerful game consoles are often just as programmable as research computers, and scientists are finding real world applications for them every day.

"There is no doubt that the entertainment industry is helping to drive the direction of high performance computational science," said Professor Peter Coveney of University College London.
The Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii in particular can function as great scientific tools.

Gaurav Khanna, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, uses an array of 16 PS3s instead of a supercomputer to simulate two black holes merging.

"A single high-precision simulation can sometimes cost more than 5,000 hours on the TeraGrid supercomputers. For the same cost, you can build your own supercomputer using PS3s. It works just as well, has no long wait times and can be used over and over again, indefinitely," said Khanna.
We've previously seen how the Wii's cheap motion sensing technology has been useful to surgeons, but more recently, the Wii has been used during rehabilitation for recovering surgery patients and as an aid in Parkinson's therapy. Now, you can go and explain to your wife/mom/savings account why you needed all three next generation consoles on launch day—to cure cancer, obviously. [Telegraph] ]]>

<![CDATA[ Slim PS3 is Heading for Shelves this Autumn? ]]> The guys at T3 are saying one of their inside men has heard word that Sony will be producing a slimmer, sexier PS3 heading for the shelves this autumn. While everyone knows that Sony will eventually shrink its very obese console, such news would come as a surprise given that Sony took many more years to shrink their PSOne and PS2 (though Sony has recently successfully shrunken their Blu-ray laser to fit in laptops). Still, Sony's biggest goal at the moment is building consoles cheaper. Maybe that means small, too. Maybe it doesn't.

Either way, T3's mock-up looks sexy as hell, and they also think a new rumored 160GB model could appear in the new slinky, skinny-as-Kate-Moss form. [T3]

Steampunk meets The Matrix in Sony's crazy spot that reminds me of a bad dream I had last week. The company is trying to somehow illustrate how the processor power of the PS3 can keep you one step ahead, but we're just thinking somebody slipped some kind of special fairy dust into the bong bowl hidden in the back room of Sony's ad agency. We've seen some weird ads, but this one reaches a new level of strange. What a peculiar concept! No wonder Sony's thinking about ditching TBWA/Chiat/Day, its ad agency covering the PS3. But wait. The spot moved me to show it to you, so it must've succeeded on some level. [CrunchGear]

<![CDATA[ Sony Looking Toward Music and Movie Distribution on PS Network to Revive Flagging PS3 Sales ]]> In a move that reiterates the fact that Sony is putting the PlayStation 3's media capabilities first and its gaming capabilities fourth, they're working on a plan to distribute music and video through their PlayStation Network. In order to boost sagging sales of the console, they want to compete more directly with Microsoft's Xbox Live service with video (along with the PS3 DVR functionality they're rolling out in Europe) instead of gaming, a move that's as back-asswards as you can find. Ask anybody on the street why they're not buying a PS3 and we'll bet you $100 that it's not "because I can't download movies on it." [Financial Times]

<![CDATA[ PS3 European Launch: A Continent Yawns and Continues Picking Its Nose ]]> fug-le-ps-trois.jpgYou've already heard about the free tellies and taxis over in London, well this is how the PS3 was welcomed in France - with a gallic shrug. Just 60 per cent of its 100,000 available units have been reserved, a smattering of press attended the official launch - and a pleasure boat coated with Xbox logos parked itself next to the Eiffel Tower for that all-important photo-op before chugging up and down the Seine. Yes, it was Microsoft who pulled out all the stops and got first dibs on what little press attention there was.

At midnight Spain, a major Sony stronghold, they were giving away half-price consoles but this morning retailers were reporting that the 600€ PS3s were not exactly flying off the shelves. An informal poll in El Corte Ingles, Spain's biggest retail chain, showed that there were still enough consoles to last until at least next week. Video of le bâteau in Paris and more European indifference/desperation after the jump.

The night before the Mayor of Madrid (he's the one looking at the la-las of the lady on his left in the picture below) was up way past his bedtime to present a cute tweenager with her first console courtesy of Banesto bank. They were selling PS3 at half the price to tout for new business (to get that offer you had to tell your employer to transfer your salary to your Banesto bank account for a minimum of 25 months). T-shirts with "My mom had her paycheck paid into Banesto and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" "I've got Playstation 3" emblazoned on the front and baseball caps were also doled out.

In Berlin, german gamers were treated to a free gig, courtesy of those nice people at Sony (thankfully, no David Hasselhoff). Italy got its consoles two days before everyone else, after retailers Darty announced that their PS3s were going on sale on Wednesday morning. Ooh, those Italians can't half be rebellious when they want to.

<![CDATA[ Blu-Ray Beats Up on HD DVD For Second Month Running ]]> SM1082~Cripple-Fight-Posters.jpg The format war is far from over, but Sony's Blu-ray camp continues to enjoy the lead over Toshiba and the rest of the HD DVD gang, edging them out in movie sales yet again for the month of February. Both formats are competing to be the next high-def disc du jour, but so far in '07 Blu-ray has managed to outsell HD DVD titles in both January and February. HD DVD fans think it's just a fad due to the PS3's popularity (the PS3 is popular?), but for the month of February the Blu-ray folks moved around 250,000 titles versus 125,000 by the HD DVD camp. Does this mean you should buy a Blu-ray player? Not any time soon, as chances are we'll see a lot more back and forth before we get a real winner.

Sony Japan says that they're expected to transition to 45-nm chips by 2008. These new chips would halve the size of the PS3's current 90-nm chips, allowing for that thinner, curvier PS3. Considering how fat the current model is, the idea of a slimmer console is a welcome idea indeed.

<![CDATA[ Sony PS3: Best BD Player Out There? ]]>
Everyone knows that Sony's PS3 is the cheapest way to bring a Blu-ray player home, but is it the best? That's the question the folks at Home Theater Blog and Ultimate AV are trying to answer. Both agree that as a standard DVD player the PS3's image quality is a bit soft, but when it comes to Blu-ray titles the PS3 is no slouch.

Here's what they had to say.

Ultimate AV:

The PS3 more than holds its own in image quality, and wins hands down on boot up and disc access speed.
Home Theater Blog:
It would be hard for me to recommend a PS3 as a primary Blu-ray playback device; to those with zero interest in gaming. On the other hand for those with at least a passing interest in gaming, multimedia and Blu-ray playback, the PS3 does indeed offer an attractive mix of features.
So while it may be difficult to find (depending on where you live), the PS3 is your best bet as far as "bargain" BD players go.

<![CDATA[ Sony Releases PS3 Update, Almost Fixes 1080i Problem ]]> Those of you lucky enough to have a PlayStation 3 will notice that a system firmware update to version 1.30 pops up as soon as you turn on your console. According to our bloodbrothers at Kotaku, the update is intended to fix that problem when playing a 720p game on an older HDTV that can't display 720p—it drops the rez to 480p instead of playing it at the 1080i your set can display. The PS3 now defaults to 1080i in your resolution hierarchy, apparently fixing the problem.

But this only works if you're playing a game that supports both 720p and 1080i. Early reports say that the PS3 still can't upscale a game from 720p to 1080i. So in games such as Resistance, whose only HD resolution is 720p, you'll still get bumped down to 480p rather than up-rezzed to 1080i. Sigh.

<![CDATA[ Official Playstation HDMI 1.3 Cable: Lipsyncs, Unnecessary ]]> Gold plated, 6.5 feet long, with the same pins as the old HDMI cables you already have and love. So: You can stick with an old cable and get all the benefits of this $60 dollar puppy that gives even greedy cable-cartel Monster a run for their money.

The benefits of HDMI 1.3, are translated into English below for easy digestion through my easily riled intellectual bowels.

Lipsync: Like Milli Vanilli, it can coordinate the output of audio and video. Increasingly important as all sorts of video and audio voodoo can cause unequal delay in the signal.

Jump for the rest of HDMI 1.3's upgrades—plus a super bonus video.

Double the Data Rate: Upgraded from 4.95 gigabits per second to 10.2 Gbps. Useless, except for the added color depth this allows

Deep color: Simply put, the new spec allows for billions of colors instead of millions. And we all know, millionaires are a dime a dozen these days.

Uncompressed audio: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio can be sent uncompressed. Existing setups can already stream that stuff decoded, as can the PS3 (I think) so this isn't going to be useful for most people, but wtf, we'll take it anyhow.

We won't complain, esp since our regular old HDMI cables work with HDMI 1.3. Instead of this $60 dollar cable, go get something cheaper. Unless you're as big of a Playstation fanboy as this guy.

You can stream media directly off memory cards (SD, CompactFlash), or you can copy them to your hard drive for easier playback and added functionality. For example, when you copy videos to your hard drive, you get "live" thumbnails—thumbnails that play themselves. <![CDATA[ PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS Controller Impressions ]]> After two days of playing with the SIXAXIS, have we reversed our previous thoughts of how good it is? Yes, I think we have.

Previously, we thought the trigger buttons were too slippery and the controller too light. Now that we've gotten a lot more play-time with it, the SIXAXIS feels just like a DUALSHOCK. The R2 and L2 shoulder buttons are pretty squishy (that's good), and as long as you press it down in the middle of the pad, there's fairly little chance of slippage. The weight issue is negligible, and the lack of rumble was hardly missed. Since rumble was never a uniform thing throughout games, not having it doesn't really affect gameplay at all.

In the two games we tried, Genji and Resistance, the controls were tight and we didn't have any problems.

<![CDATA[ HTML PS3 Interface: Take a PS3 for an Online Test Drive NOW ]]> We've had all weekend to look at the PS3, and we'll come away saying this: The extra time came in handy for figuring out the powerful machine's complicated menus. If you too want to start learning how to use the PS3 early, Sony's online manual is up. And they ingeniously built it in the exact format of the PS3's crossbar and it's completely hyperlinked.

So, if you click on over here, you can get some of the experience of owning a PS3, with $600 more dollars in your pocket, without standing in line, and um, without the games. And for some actual video of the crossbar experience, we've got that too.

<![CDATA[ Extensive PS3 Interface Walkthrough ]]> Curious as to what the PS3's hard-to-read user interface looks like? You've come to the right place. Watch the video to see all the submenus (excluding media, that's coming later).

The new system update 1.10 lets us sign online to the PlayStation Network, but unfortunately the entirety of country selection consists of Japan. We'll try again in a few days.

<![CDATA[ PS3's Charge Cable vs. Xbox 360's Charge Cable ]]> How long is the PS3's charge cable compared to the Xbox 360's? Well, watch the video to find out. Ok, done?

As you can see, the PS3's cable is only five feet long, not nearly far enough for anyone to use while playing. It's only a "charge" cable—unless you want to sit up close and incur the wrath of mothers everywhere—as opposed to Xbox 360's "play and charge" cable. Just something to keep in mind.

Update: You could also theoretically plug the PS3 controller into a laptop, a powered USB hub or an Xbox 360 sitting next to you on the couch, but that's a kludge.

<![CDATA[ PS3 Vs Eye Chart: Menu Hard To Read on Small HDTVs ]]> The PS3's menu fonts are almost impossible to read from more than 6 feet away on a 37-inch LCD running at 1080p. Most 1080p displays are larger, and most people who can afford this console at $600 bucks will have a large TV. But I think that most kids and lower end gamers who are traditional Playstation owners will have a hard time affording a bigger HDTV, yet will want to run in HD. Who wouldn't?

Either way, the fonts are too small.

BTW, I am not an eye doctor, and the comparison to the Snellen eye chart aren't literal or scientific measurements. It's a joke.

<![CDATA[ PS3 Web Browser First Look ]]>
Sony's been throwing a PS3 fest here in New York and along with Gawker's video guru, Richard Blakeley, gave us a first hand look at the PS3's web browser interface. Typing URLs with the controller is somewhat clunky as you can see from the video itself (luckily you can plug in a USB keyboard), but otherwise it'll let you open up to 6 different browser windows simultaneously and then tile them (Expose style) so you can see them all at once. Our compatriots at Kotaku also shot some videos of the PS3's picture and movie browser, the latter which displays animated thumbnails of each clip you have stored on the PS3.
