The PS1 ripping tool is the thing that I have wanted the most ever since the ability to play PS1 games came out. I have so many PS1 games that have no trade value that would suddenly become games I would consider playing again.

PS one titltles that you can buy from the PSN network come with both PS3 and PSP versions, such as Rayman, for $5.99. A converter tool probably is impossible, since they have to tweak the games a little to work for the PSP's hardware, as well as the PS3. You can do a lot with remote play right now, google it, it might be a reason for me to buy a PSP. And the PS3 has lost the war already, ehh? You guys make me laugh. The 360's been out 3 years, the PS3 2 years, PS3 has sold MOR PER YEAR THAN THE 360, and sales were up 40% since l2007. Yup, their loosing alright...right.

@LandonGalopagus: If a converter tool is so impossible because you would have to modify the games, why are you able to play PS1 games via remote play on your PSP whenever you put a PS1 disc in the PS3?

You can do a lot of things with remote play, but that's not the same as having a stand alone ps1 game running on the psp.

@LandonGalopagus: On a homebrewed PSP, you CAN have standalone PS1 games running from memory stick. I've converted FF7 and a bunch of other games for mine. I'm not sure if the most current custom firmwares still support this, but it's not only possible, it's already been done.

I don't even get how some of the PS1 games work! Don't some ps1 games require the use of the 2nd analog stick?

What do they do to overcome that on the PSP?

     Reply

@Microshock: For a lot of games the buttons are mapped so that they either are assigned to unused buttons or using a combination of buttons will allow you to get the functionality of the missing button (such as select+right shoulder= R2). For most of the PS1 games though, dual analog controls should have been voluntary.

@LandonGalopagus: I would be happy with just the ability to rip the games to my PS3 and then play them using Remote Play so that more than one PS1 game can be accessed at a time. Shit, I'd even be glad if they simply came up with a way of detecting the game in your PS3 so that if you already have a PS1 game that is available for download you can download it for free rather than paying for a game you already have.

@Alex2643: I suppose if you consider the PS3 as Sony's next generation entry which Microsoft and Nintendo have not even released a product to compete against yet, then -- yes, Sony's PS3 is doing just fine.

But, honestly - even if that were true they are still losing.

Personally, the size of the PSP is my biggest complaint. For a portable it should be smaller and start-up instantly.

Obviously the future is touch screen, they should drop the UMD and backwards compatibility and start fresh with a totally new portable. The PSP2 will need to be able to do everything the iPhone can do but more games oriented, things like keyboard and UMD only add weight.

    I would like

A more powerful psp, just cause.

A bigger storage medium for the games, at least dvd standard, dvd9 standard would be AMAZING!

Now that you have those two things, you can throw any ps2 game on the thing.

    Dual analog nubs.

    Touch screen TOTALLY not necessary.

16 GB solid state hard drive, minimum, with expansion slot for memory cards.

I don't care if it is backwards compatible for psp games.

@Robotic Bilbo Bagins: Ideally, you would want something like that so you can sell product to a bigger audience. But in reality, it doesn't work out because everybody wants everything on it for cheap and that's just not going to happen. Let's put it this way: When you take a survey and you create a product based on the average of the results, then you would just get an average product; there wouldn't be anything exceptional about it. But if you try to be original, the chances will be an extreme hit or miss. Take Apple for instance, when they create a product, they have that "fuck their opinion; I'm gonna make it the way I want it" attitude. In the end, they ended up with the iPod and iPhone. Another example would be Asus's EEE PC. Well... you get the idea.

Clearly, Sony lacks that ability and a testament to that is their shotgun approach to their products with their 70+ gadgets.
