Ah here's the one I was waiting for. I never knew that safety grooves were born out of the space program. I always assumed that the grooves in the road were just meant as an alert.
@Kaiser-Machead: Can't say I've ever run into any safety grooves. Rumble strips, on the other hand, are all over the place, and are intended as an alert for inattentive drivers and when conditions reduce road visibility. [safety.fhwa.dot.gov]
@zeroprime: Well the grooves are usually to alert you of something you're approaching, such as a weigh station for trucks, and if you happen to be approaching the border (which I hear at 3am every time I travel to Montreal).
Star Trek: Don't have to be pointed directly at the target to hit. Seriously. Next time you catch a TNG rerun, watch how far off the actors' arms are from the phaser beams themselves.
Star Wars: Can't hit a target for shit. They had to write it into games. In the Kyle Katarn series, your only hope of hitting something with an Imperial rifle was to spam the room.
Star Trek has better gadgets overall, Star Wars has better magic.
Star Trek: Technology with magic mixed in
Star Wars: Magic with technology mixed in
Both are good in their own ways, but Star Trek has better gadgets, more technobable to back them up, and just more gadgets in general
P.S. If I read any more the the responses, I'll probably go on an murderous rampage aiming for all Trekkies and Star Wars fans. Then I'll have to turn my phaser rifle on myself, since I am a Trekkie. I've decided that there are very few people who can carry on an intelligent Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate. I think I can do one intelligently, but college finals have zapped all my intelligence, so I won't try.
P.S.S Lighsaber = Lots of magic with a tiny bit of technology thrown in if you read books and care to figure out how the stupid crystals, focusing lenses, energy emitters, and other pieces work together.
P.S.S.S Transporters = Lots of magic with a tiny bit of technology thrown in with some technobable topping it all off
There's no contest AT ALL with this. Space Fantasy vs. science fiction. Star trek is more realistic (in a sense) and therefore has better and more practical gadgetry. I foresee gadgets (some already have occurred) coming from Star Trek more likely to materialize in real life, than ANYTHING from Star Wars. Besides the fact that most of the gadgets in Star Wars are weapons rather than anything useful for bettering human life. True, it doesn't make them any less cool, but it's less likely and practical for a lightsaber to be created than say a tricorder, or a transporter.
Of course it IS personalopinion (just LOOK at my avatar...)
If I was a kid my vote would be lightsaber but now I'd prefer a Holodeck. There's only so many tree limbs you can slice up before you have to start dismembering people.
Both have warp speed travel, good medical scanners, pretty good prosthetics (hands in Star Wars, eyes in Star Trek), androids (not the dumb robots in Star Wars but the smart bounty hunter androids vs. Data), blasters/phasers, etc.
Where Star Trek wins is; first their phasers come in fits in your pocket size with still deadly power, and second they travelled through time.
Obviously Spaceballs Wins. Therefore Star Trek has better gadgets. Star Trek may have Shatner, but Vader would forcechoke that motherfucker before he could even slaughter his lines.
Well, considering that Star wars was set in the past, They were extremely advanced compared to Star Trek who clearly hadn't progressed in the eons between them...
Holodeck beats anything Star Wars can come up with. yeah force and light sabres were cool, but you can create those for yourself to play with in the holodeck. Not to mention the same tech is used to feed every living thing. (Yeah you're mostly eating your own crap but come on).

If NASA could make a filter to make water taste like her ass I would drink more water.
