In '98, I got invited to go watch John Glenn go back in to space aboard STS-95. We sat in the closest observation deck to the launch (closer than Clinton, who we could see behind us).
There is nothing in the world like hearing these engines at full throttle. Even at several miles away, the roar was amazingly intense, like standing in a blast furnace.
I can remember thinking at the time how amazed I was that we as humans could create this. We've got a ways to go before we can actually be considered a space-faring race, but just the fact that we're willing and capable of building machinery like this says a lot.
@Segador: you might not have known this but there is a very large noise suppression system for the Shuttle. The engines are loud enough that if they didn't have this it would damage the Shuttle and other items.
You can see the system in operation - it's the water spray that starts up a bit before the main engines light off.
I guess...if you use you imagination they sure do. Mickey Mouse is basicly comprised of three circles on top of each other so it's not that far of a stretch. Then again if your ganna go that far it could also like like a woman with huge breasts...:P

Finished early, huh? We had quite a severe ant problem at the vineyard this year that I finished early as well. I had Art Garfunkel come by with his compressor, and we created a total vacuum outside the house, and we blew the ants out the front door. But I'm sure you high-tech NASA people could care less about our resort-town ways. Let's Jam!
@Eauboy:According to [www.unitconversion.org] 20,000 leagues = 52,105 nautical miles Hubble orbit +/- 304 nautical miles 304 NM = 116 leagues Bookmark this site. I use it almost every day.
@Eauboy: Just reading your post made me shed a tear for Phil. We really lost a genius there. It was NewsRadio's start to an end, and SNL really took a hit.
@DangerousDac: Going? What hole have you been living in? The space shuttle is low on their list. From what I have gleaned from the kook transmissions as of late, the current things to fear are: The MIAC report, the boy scouts and public school kids being trained to kill veterans, the BuildaBear(Bilderberg) Group meeting in Greece, the beta release of the Swine Flu to ready us for Marshall Law, Our fiat currency which is fake, Barack Obama being the tip of the spear for a group of extreme bankers and finance oligarchs, etc...
@bilups: Actually, the sun is VERY loud, which is why the Corona is as hot as the core, but the area in between is not. At least according to the show on the Sun I was watching last night said. I just love hearing the words "Coronal Mass Ejection".
