Google Nexus One's Hardware Components: Looking Good

Thesearethedroids.com has a running list of the hardware components in the Nexus One, gleaned from the Android 2.1 ROM. Read onward for lengthy and confusing chipset names!

* Proximity Sensor/Light Sensor: Capella CM3602 per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.
* Accelerometer: BMA150 3-axis Accelerometer per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.
* Magnetic Compass: AK8973 3-axis Magnetic field sensor/AK8973 Orientation sensor per sensors.mahimahi.so in Nexus One ROM Dump.
* Wifi Radio / Bluetooth / FM: BCM4329 in lib/modules
* In libaudio.so I found "Routing audio to Speakerphone with back mic" reference.
* In libaudio.so I found "Stereo FM speaker" also referenced.
* Audience A1026 Noise Canceling Chip – No link but here is the A1024 found in libaudio.so

802.11n Final Spec Is Final, Finally

Possible New iPhone Specs Leak: Faster Processor, Memory Bump, and FM Radio

According to a forum poster on a Chinese gadget site, the new iPhone is set to include some upgrades we'd expect, but also some we definitely wouldn't, most notably an FM radio.

This purported screenshot, showing "model MB717LL 9," definitely shows 32GB of storage, which seems pretty reasonable. The poster adds that the new iPhone's processor will get bumped to 600MHz (from 400MHz) and will double the current amount of RAM to 256MB. Aside from that, the rumors point to a camera upgrade to 3.2MP with autofocus, and, interestingly, a digital compass and an FM radio, but with no major design changes: That means the same casing, screen, and battery.

Some of this stuff is probably true, like the proc, memory, storage, and camera bumps, and we've heard that rumor about the compass before, as well as a possible FM transmitter. But honestly, we wouldn't hold out any hope for an FM radio, given Apple's track record. [MacRumors, AppleInsider]

Unconfirmed: More Canon EOS 5D Mark II Specs Leak, Lookin' Good

We can say with pretty high confidence that a 5D successor, the 5D Mk II, will be hitting before '08 is out, and with Photokina coming up later this month, rumors are beginning to fly. Canon Rumors is vouching for their source that just dropped them the following tasty-looking specs on the new full-frame sensor, top-end Canon EOS DSLR: 21.1 MP, DIGIC IV, and an HD movie mode (like the D90's), among others.

Here's the full list:

This comes from a dude that seems to be right a lot lately.

* 19 point AF

21.1 MP is considerably higher than what we've heard before, and an HD movie mode is a new one to pop up for this camera. But DIGIC IV, live view, 19 AF points and 5fps shooting make sense considering what we've seen before and the recently dropped 50D's specs. Again, could be BS, but it seems like we're getting closer. Rumor: Next-Gen Sidekick Prototype Details

In a Q&A with the Sidekick maker Danger's CEO, Financial Times asks him about what he's got in his pocket. Surprisingly, Hank Nothaft tells.

A prototype of the next Sidekick (mobile-cum-internet device). It's thinner and less wide but has a bigger keyboard. Now I no longer keep it on a belt, I'm always losing it. I was known as the "absent-minded professor" as a student.

Bigger keyboard, thinner and less wide? Sounds like a winner to us. If you're really a Sidekick fanboy, head over to FT for the rest of the interview. There isn't a whole lot of pertinent Sidekick detail, but you can get some insight into their leader. [FT - Thanks tipster!]

Nokia N96 Specs Leaked By Ze Germans

The Germans over at Nokia have posted the N96 specs on Nokia's Germany product page. There are still no official images but the N95 successor has the same obvious specs, 3G, 2.8 inch LCD, WiFi b/g, AGPS, 5MP camera, and MicroSD slot. What's new to this model is the 16GB internal memory, 950 mAh battery, ability to use flash while video recording, microUSB, and Flash Lite 3 enabled web browser.

The size is also new with the N96 being slightly longer and wider but .07 of an inch thinner than the N95. A release date is obviously still unknown and since these specs are on the German Nokia site they could change when the N96 finally hits the states. [Nokia via IntoMobile]

HDMI Spec Upgraded to Support "Deep Color"

Just when we started getting used to the HDMI interface, they've gone and upgraded it again, where it will now support what's known as "deep color." The group controlling the interface, HDMI LLC—founded by Sony, Thompson, Philips, Matsushita, Hitachi, and Toshiba—decided to upgrade HDMI to version 1.3, where the increased bandwidth will allow support of 1080p displays with up to 36-bit RGB color. HDMI President of Licensing Leslie Chard explains:

"The color bit depth [of today's displays] is typically 24-bits RGB - that gets you 16 million colors, and the human eye can distinguish that. That leads to scaling and onscreen effects which you can pick up. Either 36-bit or 48-bit RGB is beyond the ability of the human eye to distinguish."

We have seen scaling, and it's not all that pretty. In areas where there are subtle gradations of the same color, you can see bands of color across the screen. Beyond about 30-bit color, we can't see the difference. Anyway, expect to see numerous products by the end of the year that support this HDMI 1.3 spec, and then colors will be far deeper than any of us can see. That's great: pay extra, get a new product that supports something you can't see. Sounds like a flea circus. – Charlie White
