In reply to Palm Looking At Other Carriers; Faster, Snappier webOS 1.3.5 Update On Its Way Soon
If there is any company that should sell direct to consumers, it's Palm. They're in some deep, deep trouble if they don't do something and quick. Admit that the retail price of a phone should be around $300, sell them unlocked directly to consumers, and outfit them with a chip that can handle v&d on at least the GSM carriers in the US. That's my turnaround plan for Palm - feel free to take it at no charge, Jon.

@OMG! weatherman: But what manufacturer has seen any success in selling unlocked devices in the US? I honestly believe that Palm is still doing all the right things, my biggest criticism is this stupid relationship with Sprint but if theyre finally branching out to other carriers i promise we'll see some new positive buzz for them.

Give me an updated pre on Att without the slight lag Web OS desperately needs to get rid of (which is why the next firmware sounds magical) and ill happily leave my iphone for it. I think in a world where iphone's ui is aging a bit and 50 million new android phones make it harder to have one standout, palm still has the chance to be a breath of fresh air if they can weather the storm

@Amir Shaikh: Well Nokia's trying and not doing terribly well, but it's not because they're selling unlocked phones, it's because their phones suck. Well, they don't really suck, but they're not competitive with Apple or Android phones really, and they tend to skew more towards the low end of the market which probably appeals to a subsidized phone market as well.

I fundementally believe that if given the choice most people would prefer to buy an unsubsidized phone, and that if most people did we would see a big drop in service prices. But right now the service providers are trying desperately to hang on to the power they think they have, and controlling the phones is the their last stand really. If Google goes direct to consumers, others will have to follow suit including Palm. So maybe Palm should be ahead of the race this time instead of pulling in third or fourth or dead as they have done in the past.

In reply to Sprint Confirms Android 2.0 for HTC Hero, But You're Gonna Wait a While
I just wish the price would come down on the Hero, even for the friends and family or SERO plan, it's still 280 bucks, and then you have to wait a couple of months to get the $100 rebate back. With the Droid, you can get it for 100 bucks and don't have to wait for the rebate if you get it at Best Buy. I suppose that Sprint doesn't recoup as much money from higher monthly costs, so they need to charge more in the upfront costs, but it's hard to justify throwing down almost 300 bucks on a phone when my Touch still does just fine.

So I was considering upgrading my Sprint phone to something running Android this Christmas, but I wanted to wait for 2.0. Now that I see I have to wait this long, it barely even makes sense for me to stay with Sprint. Is upgrading to the current version really this hard?

@ForestFire0: If you're willing to get your toes wet (and if you post here you just might be) then custom brews of 1.6 have significant features of 2.0 squeezed in and you can have instant gratification. Consider too that you can still use out-of-box 1.6 as a type of GPS navigation (responsibly, natch), just not with fancy flythrough graphics and vocal turn-by-turn.

On the other hand, over the next six months there will be new Android phones on various carriers - some of them with better hardware, some of them running the latest official release. Decisions, decisions...

@Killjoy: Well, with all the talk of Google phones from Google made by HTC, I have a good idea what I'll be choosing for my next phone. But all this talk of instant gratification and doing-it-myself is pretty enticing.

@jon.athan: Well, my contract with Sprint is up pretty soon and the only reason I choose it in the first place was because it was the only carrier with service at my home, where I no longer live. And if Sprint doesn't have the phone I want, why can't I look around?

@eeJonathan: Well it seems Google's been more than a little stingy with the 2.0 update. The source code didn't even drop until either pretty close to or after the day the Droid was released.

I don't think any exclusive deal was made public, but it seems that at least for a while the Droid is the only device running 2.0. In fact, perhaps this deal is the reason the Hero has to wait so long. Unfortunately, it's all speculation from here.

After a conversation about this game with a youth leader at our local church, she had me adapt the game to be a live-action scavenger hunt wherein some some of the 20-somethings in our group volunteered to dress up as Zombies and attempt to attack or capture the kids.

That's right. Because of this game, I got to be a zombie. And attack children. At a church.

I'd disagree that a task manager is mandatory for keeping an Android phone speedy. I used to run TasKiller on my Hero, but uninstalled it after doing some research, and haven't seen any performance drop. Something about the way Linux allocates memory and handles background processes...

@cc82: The general consensus is that killing tasks makes no difference in speed, and some who run task killer programs end up with glitches. There were those who were running a task killer app and because they kept killing their background email programs they ended up screwing up their email accounts.

I ran a task killer for a few days and I got rid of it after udating to 2.0.1... I don't even notice it's gone. The phone is fast, period. No need for a task killer in my opinion.

@Yinzers Are People Too: A good graphic artist will be able to do that. Hide multiple interpretations in the same logo.

The FedEx logo is the classic example. A simple, easy to identify five-letter, two-color word that you always recognize. Then you see the arrow. And your life is never the same again.

It uses the negative space to create a shape. Some people see it, others don't. Fortunately, the logo works either way. However, because it's so cleverly sort-of hidden, you end up talking about it. Which is a nice bonus for the marketing team.

@Crimson33: The article twists the meaning somewhat. Yahoo isn't really "selling" information. When law enforcement agencies subpoena a company (Yahoo, Google, MS, whoever) for information, there is nothing much that they can really do about it. The numbers above just say how much Yahoo is reimbursed for using its resources to provide this information.

Meaning - Yahoo is probably not the only company with a chart of prices like this. It just so happens that Yahoo's chart got published here. I was sort of joking in my first comment.
