I've long passed the point where I would automatically check out every single Square (and later Square Enix) game, just by virtue of it being a Squaresoft title, and almost certainly a quality title. That said, what the hell, Square? We get some tower defense game... and then a music RPG? I mean it's a novel concept, but where are the hardcore final fantasy games? I'd kill for a brand new final fantasy game in the style of FF2-3 (US versions). Or a damn crono trigger port for crying out loud. Maybe I'm just being old when I say this, but where are the RPGs of old on the iphone?
@Señor Cagon: well i'm assuming you were talking about the crono port, not the NEW final fantasy games made for the platform that don't exist.
But in that case, it runs like hell on my 3g and the controls are blindingly frustrating. the interface / controls are the only things that would need re-working.
If I recall, this came out right around the same time I purchased my iPhone 2G, and had sold my iPod. I was always disappointed. Very interesting premise, like the old Monster Rancher games for the PS1.
Is it worth $10 though?
@Ryan_Long: If the new game is anything like the original, it was pretty disappointing yes. I bought it for 5 bucks and thought that my own music would be involved in more ways than it was, or that the song titles/artists would have something to do with the character names/places/something. That's not the case, and basically the songs are just used to randomly create a character based off, I don't know, magic or something.
If there was a way to make the characters created from your songs a bit more customizable it might have been a lot more fun.
The gameplay is just basically Final Fantasy Tactics Light, which isn't a bad thing, and was pretty entertaining, but it didn't hold my interest very long. I was expecting a game that was a bit more personalized around my musical tastes and got something else. Not a bad game, just not what I was expecting.
But on the other hand, it was only five bucks. I didn't feel too bad about it.
@korybing: That sucks. I was hoping I could breeze through this game due to the enemies generated by my shoegazer-laden library, who would simply sit there and ponder their existance while I stroll on by and collect treasure.
All the other consoles are getting motion controllers, the only advantage the Wii has over the rest so far.Hell, I heard Project Natal will even come to the PC.
So what's Nintendo's answer to that? Speed up the next console by a year or two. Bring today's technology to it.
All the kids go Wooooooooooh!
Then in 2011 the PS4 and XBox740 will basically have to compete with a console as powerful as the PS3 and 360.
Sounds like a foolproof plan to me.
No wait.
p.s. I only own a pc and a wii. I ain't buying any ps3 or x360 ever. Just to clarify things a bit before someone starts calling me biased or something...
@dallasmay: Except Surface DOES exist. You can find it all over the place-- used on TV channels like CNN, in AT&T B&M stores, in other retail outlets. Just because people aren't buying them for their homes does not mean Surface isn't real.
I have never seen one in any ATT store that I have ever gone into. I heard once there were plans to install one in a ATT store in San Antonio, but unless you can provide a photo of a MS Display actually in use (Not promotional from MS, but a real-taken-in-the-wild photo) I'm going to have to call BS.
And a single unit, custom built for a TV network barely counts, if at all. Besides, CNN develops their tech in house.
@dallasmay: Project Natal is NOTHING. It is something to generate interest in their press conference after The Beatles Rock Band *yawn*, and, oh yea the only game that put them on the map. Halo 3.
Natal is a joke. Prove me wrong.
Sony at least has tech demos, and frankly, that's probably all they will become this gen of hardware.
Console gaming disappoints me.
I bought Alone in the Dark for 360 and thought it is great. Against nearly 80% of instant gratification sheeple.
I'd rather dust off my Genesis and play Sonic 1, 2, and Mortal Kombat, than to wait around to see how minimal improvements EA make to this or ANY years Madden, while at the same time doing all they can to purchase and BURY innovative tech such as "BackBreaker".
Oh, and for God's Sake SOMEBODY give me a DAMN Star already! What do I have to do?, change my username to Kaiser Mac-Head, Git-emSteveDave, or OMG! PONIES!! Sheeh!
I don't give a shit. The only games I bought for my Wii was Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. Everything else on that platform is stuff my sister and mom bought, so like WiiFit and things like that. Still didn't get that new Zelda, Kirby, or Star Fox that everyone is waiting for, and I doubt my mom would be able to justify buying a new Wii, especially when my 360 will apparently be good for another 5 years.
If there is a new Wii, it's probably DOA. Gamers won't want it, Casuals won't want to replace the system they have now, and publishers won't want to produce for it since very rarely did they make a profit from games they made for it.
@ddhboy: Wow, really? That was such a bias comment. Sure, I'm not exactly head-over-heels for the Wii either, but it's not the scum of the console world. The only thing holding the console back for hardcore gamers and developers of hardcore gamer-games is the hardware and control capabilities. Both of which are being said to be massively upgraded. I think this is going spread appeal to the Wii a thousand times over.
I still think it's a bit early for them to release another console. They haven't even shipped a different colored one yet. They're still on top, and raking in the dough. There are still plenty of franchises to milk, and money to be made on this current Wii.
@ThisCharmingMan: Personally, I think the current Wii is just a preview to what this one is. They're still using dated Gamecube tech with this console. And I can't wait for the Wii to come out with a current gen technology console.
@Invisible-Echidna: Hmm yes, I don't think I've heard of this fabled "current gen technology". Perhaps you could link me to the wikipedia page...or, better yet, don't be such an ignorant graphics whore.
@NeoAkira: It's not just a matter of graphics, man. Check out the Dead Rising port and say with a straight face that the only problem is a lower polygon count...
@NeoAkira: Look, we don't have to turn this into a Monkey Island insultathon.
"3. Lack of HD is not hurting the console."
Anyone who wants an hd for the wii allready has one.
How is that absolutely nothing? What's so absolute about it? Well, at least you found my post hilarious...
Personally I'm all for defending the Wii, but I'd rather do it with real defences. Super Mario Galaxy is not as heavy as the top games of the other two consoles. Can you imagine GTAIV on the wii? I bet the console couldn't take it even is you replaced all human models with the low polygon miis. At best, the wii can barely outperform the ps2. There are limits, dude...
This just can't be right, it is so un-Wii like. Come on, Nintendo, we are all waiting for the high definition add-on for the Wii that will also track our body temperature! Wow, that will be amazing!
Between this lovely rumor and the miraculous [cough] $50 price drop, the Wii might sell a couple dozen units this Christmas.
(Don't listen to me folks, I never would have predicted the Wii controller gimmick would make it the hottest selling game machine on the market, so Nintendo will almost certainly make me look like an idiot typing this comment.)
even if this rumor is confirmed to be true, Nintendo has made it very clear in the past that Wii data is non-transferable.
a lot of sales will be lost if i cannot transfer all of my content to the new Wii without hassle.
now the question is would a DVD player still be relevant in today's era of steaming videos? will the new Wii do away with discs all together and be cloud based and dirt cheap?
Oh come on! My wife wants a Wii but the one argument I had in favor of a 360 or a PS3 over was their supremely better graphics . . . don't let her win!
Huh, so in 2011 the Wii HD will match the 360 and ps3's graphical capabilities...Meanwhile Microsoft and Sony's new consoles leap forward in performance.
most rumors put the next gen starting in 2012. A year's head start could be enough to secure some third party exclusives and maybe some original IP. They MUST appeal the hardcore gamer though. A casual gamer won't see any reason to buy it when they already have a wii.
@hcho3: You do realize that is Nintendo's whole marketing strategy with the Wii in the beginning, right? That "nobody is going to keep buying same consoles with just HD."
That is why they released the Wii as a slight upgrade to the GameCube, instead of a loss leader like the Xbox and PS3, because it was cheap to do, and they added the new control scheme. And their marketing gamble paid off.
So is it a new console? Cause right now I'm ordering component cables, an HDMI cord and a converter for the two so that I can hook the Wii up to my 24" monitor.

1. The one they have now is dominating the competition.
2. They could easily increase sales of this current console by adding new colors/lowering price.
3. Lack of HD is not hurting the console.

One shitty port does not outline the capabilities of a system.
Go look at SMG or SSBB if you think the Wii's graphics are abysmal and you'll realize the Wii can be very pretty if you actually try.
And your comment about the backup loaders is hilarious since it has absolutely nothing to do with my original post.

ever hear of the ds lite? same console, still sold like hotcakes. Im sure HD wii will also.
also, more powerful graphics, new controller.. doesnt that essentially make it the next gen nintendo console, rather than an updated wii?
