Staples to Start Selling Self-Destructing DVDs, Didn't Get the Memo

The tech world is full of inherently terrible ideas, but one especially bad one that just won't seem to die is the idea that people want to buy DVDs that will self-destruct in a couple of days. Beyond the fact that the entire concept is a giant kick to the balls of the environment, it's an idea that consumers have shown zero interest in getting behind. But here we are, nearly a decade after the idea was first floated, and Staples is about to get onboard with them.

Flexplay, a company that's been peddling self-destructing DVDs for five years or so, teaming up with the office supply store to start selling the coasters for $4.99 each later this month. It's pretty much exactly like the deal between DIVX and Circuit City that tanked so badly back around the turn of the century, but now they're doing it at a time when downloads are becoming more popular, Netflix is ubiquitous and there's a newer disc format out there competing with DVD. Boy, I don't see how this can fail! [PC World]

Staples Offers Seagate Data Recovery Service in all Stores

According to Informationweek and Computerworld, Segate has inked a deal with Staples that will bring data recovery services to all of the retail chain's 1400 stores. The deal will allow users to reclaim their lost data from any type of digital media, regardless of brand or condition. After a free evaluation, the experts will determine whether or not the data can be salvaged and what fee should be charged for its recovery.

The data recovery will be done on site unless the problem is particularly tricky — in that case the device would be sent to the Seagate lab. Turnaround times are expected to be 3-5 days for smaller devices and a week for large devices. The recovered data will be presented to the customer on a Seagate USB device, or a 6GB Seagate pocket drive depending on the amount of data recovered. In the event that the process fails, the customer will not be charged.

The Staples / Segate partnership definitely sounds like a great option for anyone who isn't in the habit of backing up their vast porn collections. However, until more pricing information is made available, it is hard to tell whether this presents a cheaper alternative to other services out there —although it had damn well better be a better option than the f'ng Geek Squad. Here's yet another Black Friday ad for those of you brave enough to take on the violent shopping orgy scheduled to take place the day after Thanksgiving later this month. Some of the juicier deals include a 15.4-inch Compaq Dual-Core laptop with 1GB RAM, an 80GB HDD, DVD-RW, and a free printer for $349.98 as well as a 42-inch widescreen LCD HDTV for $749.98, although it isn't clear what the brand is on that one. Dell Products Headed For Staples Retail Stores

In a break from Dell's traditional mail order biz, an agreement reached today with the Staples retail chain will bring Dell brand notebooks, desktops, monitors, printers, and ink to over 1400 Staples stores across the U.S. Initially Staples will carry Inspiron 1721 and 1521 notebooks, Inspiron 530 desktops, 948 and 926 All-in-one printers, the 1320c laser printer, the Dell SE198WFP 19-inch LCD, E228WFP 22-inch LCD, and most types of Dell brand ink and toner with more products to be added over time. A similar agreement was signed with Wal-Mart earlier this year, making this the second time Dell has partnered with a major US retailer and the first time it has scored a 3-way.[Staples via i4u]

Staples is having a one-day sale, today only. They are featuring a GE Wireless Multimedia Keyboard and Mouse for $18.99 out the door. No mail-in-rebates, just $18.99 directly from Staples.com. This combo normally retails for $59. Not too shabby. I'm sure GE doesn't produce the highest quality computer peripherals, but this may be perfect for that media center or car pc. Take note that the combo is old-school PS/2 and not that fancy pants USB. – Travis Hudson
