If this was in the $30-40 range I would buy a ton of these. I have lots of plants and proper lighting is difficult to achieve while still looking decorative. Unfortunately, things like this always end up being more than I am willing to pay (like the aerogarden). One problem I see is you don't get good drainage. It would be nice if there was a removable plug on the bottom so you could use an optional saucer.

Let me know when this goes into production. I've killed at least 3 house plants in the past year and I'm sure I could kill another with this.

There's something I ran across somewhere that might be safe from the likes of us. It was sold under the name "dinosaur plant", and basically it's supposed to be able to survive for up to 50 years without water. Water it, it revives. Forget to water it for a day or two...hundred...ish, and it just goes dormant again. Probably doesn't flower, but neither do a lot of houseplants.

@vgrfx: I dunno, are you smarter than a fifth grader? Fish tank filters/heaters/lights/etc involve those same two elements, so long as the electrics are properly sealed there is really nothing to worry about...

Incorrect spectrum for Mary Jane, Also not tall enough; some of those suckers grow over a meter tall. At least that's what my friends tell me?

On another note...

What about aeration holes in the bottom, we don't want to get root rot do we? I'll stick with chia pets.

@Ryanraven: Some Lowrider seeds will grow very nicely, without exceeding 12" in height. Ahh, the wonders of genetic engineering.

@Drew420: Light placement and selective pruning can stunt the vertical growth of pretty much any strain if you know what you are doing...

But either way, you're not going to get much out of a setup like this...

@jslizzle: It is possible to control the growth height by putting the light very very close and selective pruning. However even if you manage to do that correctly I doubt this would put out enough light to grow anything more than ditch-weed (and in small amounts at that)...
