Halo fanboys are creeps, eh? Nice... I had suspicions that Giz was biased against Halo (io9, too), so unless I'm reading way too much into this (I probably am), my suspicions are confirmed.
See, this is why we can't have nice things. Now I just hope that they don't ever make Second Life, XBox edition, because we know stuff will start to get crazy.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. DRIVING 30 HOURS FOR SOME PUNANI? There is not a PUSSY IN THE WORLD that is worth that much gas money to me.....Desperate men are desperate.
So if Myspace can purge them, why can't Microsoft? Maybe not kill Live entirely for them, but maybe disable chat methods? Messaging? $50/year should warrant a safe playing environment
Wii didn't get motion controls right the first time either. Thus, Wii MotionPlus. People still gobble that up like Rob Reiner at a steak buffet. But I'm not defending the Wii as a console for hardcore gamers either, unlike the 360 or PS3.
I don't say this often, but because they've given themself enough time, and because they F'ed up the console so bad, I have faith Microsoft will do this one thing right.... Well, right enough, at least.
I've been flamed for this before but I will say it again. Pinpoint accuracy is going to win the motion detection game. It's no fun to "waggle" if you have EVER been an even slightly hardcore gamer (I WILL be buying Red Steel 2). I'm not into a body waggle experience. I want to slice em' and dice em' like a ninja. I want to make 7 different motions, spin around and land on one knee, yell "waaaaaaaaa....." with the sound trailing off like Bruce Lee, after decimating my real life or CPU oponent with a furious and super accurate combo!!
Who want's to bet that PS3 let's you do this and the 360 Natal does not?
Oh yeh and as I put my flame shield back up again, I own a 360, Wii, Ps3 and a PC.
I think Microsoft will make this work if the treat Natal as an accessory to the control scheme... not as the main part, but as something that could help or be used to control certain aspects of the game.
As for Sony, they only need to make it LESS UGLY. That is all.
Natal's critical flaw is that it is a peripheral that is not included with the console. It will also most likely cost upwards of $100. That means less than 5% of 360 owners will buy it. Which leads me to conclude there will not be any games that support it.
I think MS have got the wrong end of the stick as far as motion control is concerned. I think the better approach is the way Sony and Nintendo are headed, a blend of traditional controls with motion. That's not to say that Natal can't perform this as well but it doesn't seem to be its focus. Motion control works in some cases (I thoroughly enjoyed RE4 on Wii) but can be tedious in others. I don't want traditional controls to die though.
@Odin: I don't see why Natal means that MS isn't going for a mixed solution. I'm betting you can use a controller at the same time Natal is running. Perhaps making you turn more in a game when you lean while using a controller like old folks do.
"you could use a standard 360 controller AND Natal to have a camera track your head while an analog stick aims the gun."
This sounds incredibly awkward to me, as you would have to move your head, while keeping your eyes trained on the stationary tv, and you can wind up looking around A LOT in games, especially fps. That just sounds like more of a chore.
@jepzilla:
That's actually very impressive, and I lvoe that 3d effect, but it seems to require quite a bit of movement at the distance he is at.
A lot of movement.
@Demonbird: It's not an exaggerated amount of movement. The graphics viewport is matched to the viewer's actual position in space to create a 3d effect.
Technology like this is going to require some sort of hybrid control scheme until the holodeck is invented. But if you've ever played a game like ArmA with a TrackIR (head tracking device), the hybrid control scheme is really quite natural.
@Demonbird: I'm thinking that your head movement wound give you limited control of the viewing angle but you still control body movement with a controller.
@Demonbird: I think that would work well for shooters. You can do all sorts of things with the cameras. If they see you duck a little it could move you behind cover. If you lean left it can tilt the perspective over so the TV is more like a window but the real fine control can still be in the controller.
@Xeno: I see, and that's what I was starting to think, but I doubt such a shooter will be made for natal on the 360, unless natal has an immediate and massive adoption by the console owners.
I mean staggering.

Having used headtracking in PC gaming, I can tell you it's actually a very natural, very fun experience.

I'd have to try it. It just sounds like it wouldn't be worth it just to replace the right joystick.

Oh yeah, and these days he works fro Microsoft, on Natal.

My problem is I am imagining trying to turn around with that system.

Certainly. I dream of a psp 2 with ps2 ports common as dirt, and 2 analog sticks.
