This makes me angry. No, I'm not mad at the companies involved. I'm mad at the massive toddler bitchfit that resulted from this outage. Give me a break, it's not that big of a deal people. You can live without your phone for a little bit, it's not essential to your life. They act as if their mental, emotional, and physical health was drastically affected. Lawsuits? Greedy, opportunistic bastards. Did they consider using their new found phoneless freedoms to go outside and/or enjoy some peace and quiet? Take a walk in the park or something, occasionally it's nice to be tech free. I realize that some people may have sincerely needed their phone for emergencies, work, etc, but I would bet the majority of those affected are just whining like spoiled children. #sidekickdatarecovered
Look, Sidekick, I know this is your time in the spotlight, and I'ma gonna let you talk in a minute but the iPhone lets you back up your contacts to your own machine as well as store them in the cloud.
@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: you can do that with a sidekick too but most users tend not to do it. consider the vast majority of the target users. Do you think a 14-18yo female or some club kid is thinking about backing her contacts up to a pc/mac?
This is why if someone gives me an important number, I write it down on a piece of paper and swallow it. That way I'll have it forever. Sure, when I do this, people tend to look at me like I'm crazy. But after this whole Sidekick fiasco, I'm thinking crazy like a fox, huh!
I was talking to my friend last night that has a Sidekick: She followed T-Mo's instructions, didn't turn her phone off. Once the outage was out, she re-imported all of her contacts from the SIM card.
I would surmise that SIM card backup was they key to all the above, not the turning off of the devise. Harsh lesson for those that didn't backup.
CNN said that T-Mobile had saved some user's contact details to the last working Apple Time Machine in the US - and that these contacts were restored just seconds before that Time Machine burst into flames after 17 months of service.
Everyone else's data was stored on a modified XBox 360, so they were screwed.
"Hi, sidekick users? T-Mo here... Sorry 'bout that data issue, but ya know if you buy this shiny new android phone it shouldn't happen again. Here's $100 off the new shiny toy for your trouble."
mmhmm...
@aja175: I mean, come on. It's not like GOOGLE'S gonna have server trouble! They're Google! When have you ever had an issue accessing your data through a Google service?
So how long before we see T-Mobile file suit against Microsoft? This is essentially Microsoft's screwup and Tmo is the one that's going to take the hit for it. I'd be rather surprised if it doesn't end up getting litigated.
@Slack3r78: It might never come to litigation but I wouldn't be surprised if T-Mobile gets a big chunk of change out them anyway. Sometimes remedies for this stuff are spelled out in the contract. Even if it isn't, MS would do better PR-wise to settle quietly and get this out of the press.
@FigNinja: Well, the main reason I think that this could get ugly is that it stands to really hurt T-mobile in a big way. They're the ones having to try to compensate Sidekick users, they're likely to lose an not insignificant number of subscribers over it, and that's not even getting into what it stands to do to their reputation given the devices were branded T-Mobile rather than Danger/Microsoft.
I like how they don't say "everyone" for the $100 credit. Every attempt T-Mobile has made to help rectify the situation for me (yes, I am a user) has failed. Luckily I had my stuff backed up, but had no data services. So does that mean since I didn't lose my info I don't get the $100, even though I had no use of internet, email, etc? Not fair to punish those who are responsible!
@jenner8675309: I think they mean that people like you get the one month of free data service as compensation. What disturbs me is the wording, "significant and permanent loss of personal content". Who says what is significant? I don't like wiggle room in these kinds of statements.
I just wonder why did Microsoft had to stick their nose into this company, I don't have anything against microsoft but everything they touch is turning to crap lately. I had a few hundred Pictures and email attachment in my Hotmail account that whore sitting there for years, all it took was microsoft to start messing around with their New Microcrap live shit, and they where all gone.
@snitch: UGH. YES. Because of Microsoft's fuckuppery, I don't touch Hotmail for anything important. It's basically my junk box, which fits it like a speedo.
Actually, Dan, T-Mo is the only white hat in this story. Maybe you have better info that didn't make it into this brief post, but every account I've heard points out that in this case the data's SAN was managed by Hitachi as a contractor to what was left of the old Danger Inc., now owned by Microsoft. With more than a million Sidekick users sending T-Mo at least $50 a month, the carrier's got some pretty strong incentive to be sorry and to want its users to be happy.
@bobinravenswood000: T-Mobile is the one that took people's money and the one's that needs to keep customers so they're going to be the front line in making it good. Hopefully they'll get to take it out of MS (who will hopefully take it out of Hitachi). I think they're getting raked for something that isn't much their fault, though.
@ducttape38: I think that's the biggest thing they could do to keep customers. Even if a customer realizes T-Mobile wasn't the source of the problem, they will likely want out of the Sidekick and they won't think it's fair to have to pay full price on a replacement phone. If that's the choice they're given, they'll bail.
@Ruthless, If you let me: Same for me with my G1. The one feature of my phone I'll be glad I have in the long-term. I have over 200 contacts. I tried to jailbreak my G1 a few months ago, just like I used to jailbreak my iPhone and other phones, and boom. Bricked. I sent my phone to T-Mo, and they replaced it for free. I was worried about all my contacts being lost, but upon the initial required sign-in to my Gmail account, ALL of my contacts were back in my phone. Hooray for Android/Google.
@ovil200: You can actually do this with any phone that has MS Exchange support. Yes, even the iPhone (gasp!).
The big G calls it Google Sync ([www.google.com])
@dragon: ONE: If I were a sidekick user, I would bail on the sidekick completely, since microsoft/danger blew it and not T-Mobile. At least this way they can switch to newer phone for cheaper...

Sorry, make it a prepaid VISA or a straight out check. I don't think a majority of your Sidekick users will continue on with T-Mobile.

But that $100 of T-Mobile monies is going RIGHT back into getting that new Bold 9700 when it hits =]
