I'm not at a tech company but I have been lucky.

I'm at a law firm looking to expand. The last firm I worked at has laid off or had quit 15 out of its 30 attorneys in the past 6 months.

My wife's company (and my biggest client) just laid off several people and the execs all took a pay cut to keep things moving. They're a small tech startup and from the sounds of it the VC purse strings have tightened significantly in the last month.

Hell yes! And sadly I'm the hitman. I had to give notice to huge companies that entire projects would be cut. Don't kill the messenger!

Not yet, we've been understaffed for years though, so there's not much to cut. Though I can think of a few ass holes that could get cut, and it would actually reduce our workload.

I work in the med field which tends to be more stable in the hard times. There will always be sick old people. However, said sick old people have to assets totalling less than $2,000, including their home unless a qualified spouse resides in that home, in order to qualify for medicaid. In this economy, I see far more people who will be willing to take care of their parents and grandparents just to make sure they don't lose their meager inheritances.

we have been trying to hire 2 techs for months, we think we finally got our last one. tech jobs come in all different varieties...
but i was unemployed for 5 months after being laid off from my previous tech job. when i was at one of my EDU meetings, we did a round-table session where everyone detailed their job indsutry to try and network. people about dropped their jobs when i told them i was out of work tech support. luckily i finally got mu current job, and it is awesome.

we hire a lot too.

anyone in SF bay that needs a tech job?

We've kept our one tech guy. We have, however, let go about a third of our employees. Luckily, I'm underpaid and very good at what I do. Right now that is a good combination.

yeah, they let go 2 people at my office, leaving only 5 of us. they canned one tech and our shipping and receiving guy.

thankfully, they kept me (because I can do both of their jobs - and mine - while they were really only good for one thing each) which is a real relief because one of them had been here longer than me.

no raises this year for anyone, either, and the stock isn't looking so great. (on the bright side, im buying it cheap right now)

Well, it's a start-up so we're not actually dependent on income yet... In fact, we've doubled in size in the 4 months I've been here.

@Lite: i work at a start up that is little over a year old... we have money but we have followed the trend of cutting people loose and no pay raises... even though we just hired some new people... i have no idea whats going on

@purple-pillows: Well, I'm in the weird position of working for a financially transparent start-up. We have monthly meetings about where we sit cash-wise, how we meet up with budget estimates, yadda.

It's hard to miss where the company is financially when they sit you all down in a meeting and go over payouts.
