I'm sooo getting one. My telco is hosing me!

My wife needed a land line for 3 months so she called and had them hook it up. Called to cancel the other day and they say we cant cause we signed up for a 1 Frackin Year Contract! WTF? Since when do land lines have contracts? Was news to both of us. So it's either pay $250 to get out or keep it for another 9months....f'n bastards Frontier sobs! #telephonelinepoweredlamp

@bonedog73: out of curiosity, is your cellphone provided by the same company? they may have bundled the two together contractually for a lower price. #telephonelinepoweredlamp

As news of this lamp spread around the blogosphere, John McCain began drafting legislation to deal with these "electricity pirates".

How are electricity companies, who provide power for your television, stereo, embedded household lights, kitchen appliances, and cell phones supposed to compete when people are powering their lamps for free from the telco industries? Not to mention that AT&T and Verizon are now footing the bill for this tiny lamp. Outrageous! #telephonelinepoweredlamp

I can only ASSume that you must have telephone service for this to work? Anyone... Anyone... Bueller? Who has landlines anymore. If you don't need "active" service, I'm lighting up my house for next to nothing. I counted 9 phonejacks so far. #telephonelinepoweredlamp

@TerryinSt.Paul: I was wondering that too, but after some unresearched thought, I believe the phone jacks are powered whether or not you have phone service, so the lamp will work, but it may not be able to make local or long distance phone calls.

I honestly don't even know for sure if my current place has phone jacks... It's an 80 year old building, built without them. I'm sure they were installed along the floorboards at some point, the common practice for retro fitting phone jacks, but the previous owner replaced the floorboards. He was a young guy, probably didn't have a landline, and I never even checked to see if he bothered to reattatch the little jacks! #telephonelinepoweredlamp

Interesting idea, but why not have a phone with it too. I still use a landline (VOIP) and actually have phones in all my jacks. #telephonelinepoweredlamp

@Curves: I agree that they should have an alternate version with a phone. Perhaps it doesn't put off enough power for you to talk and have the light on.

Also you could use a phone splitter:

Hey, with fewer people using landlines these days, may as well do SOMETHING with those empty sockets.

Anyone know if phone lines carry enough current to power USB devices?

Edit: Hey, looks like someone already did:

There's a market for that. I'd buy one. Beats taking up a wall socket with a silly phone charger.

Edit again: Yahoo Answers informs me it will take a ridiculous amount of time to charge things. [answers.yahoo.com]
