Having finally gotten the Pre in my hands this morning, I can say it's definitely something I would consider. It's actually very cool, the screen looks fantastic, and the OS has a degree of polish that arguably surpasses that of the iPhone. The rounded, pebble-like shape is very nice and an excellent size, though it becomes absolutely filthy with fingerprints and smears almost immediately. The model I was playing with had the matte back that goes with the Touchstone, which I vastly prefer to the shiny back, as it feels just a bit less like a toy and is less slippery in your hand. I wouldn't even consider getting the Pre without the Touchstone.
It is also clear upon handling it why they chose to make the bottom edge the way they did, and why it's a problem. Think of the unit as a rounded rectangular box, and then imagine slicing it in half lengthwise -- the resulting edge is sharp. It maintains the clean line around the edge when the keyboard is closed; if they rounded the bottom edge, it would create a groove all the way around the bottom of the phone. However, while that might not have been quite as aesthetically pleasing, it would feel much better when the keyboard is open, and it would also give you a groove to dig your finger into, making it easier to push the slider open. The slider is actually not the easiest thing to push open, as there isn't a groove or edge to give you much leverage. At any rate, that edge along the bottom isn't a flaw or mistake, it was a design decision, however questionable. Cheese-cutting jokes aside, it's not that bad, but you could get a bit of a scratch from it if you weren't careful. I wouldn't be ashamed to take an emery board to it. =)
I'm going to hold out until at least Monday to see what Apple announces... and by that time, I'm guessing the initial run of the Pre will be gone, so I'm sure it will be late July before I make a decision anyway.
my son and i both just came home with these - and sprint was extremely cool!! even though we were only eligible for some kind of basic current customer upgrade, we instead both got it for 200 - plus i've got a buyer for my curve, which brings us down to 99 each...this thing is AWESOME
I'm pretty sure you have to pay for Classic (the Palm OS emulator). It costs $30. Here is a list of missing features in case anyone is interested.
no SD card slot
contacts sync with entire Facebook friends list
no video recording
no visual voicemail
can't edit or create MS Office documents (yet)
no Adobe Flash (yet)
no infrared
only about 12 third party apps so far
can't sync memos
no Street View in Google Maps
no compass
Can't copy uneditable text (e.g., most parts of websites)
no data transmission during calls (e.g., no GPS navigation during calls)
no internet tethering
no 802.11N
small keyboard
No voice recording (?)
By the way, I've never owned an Apple product and I am a Palm fan (I've owned 4 Palm devices) but I think these are worth mentioning. Sorry if these come out double spaced, I wrote a similar comment yesterday that did.
@camron9989: as far as i heard a lot of that list is coming on the software side with updates. as far as tethering goes i am sure there will be a work around for it shortly. also, in the pre's defense some of that list is sprint's fault (no date and voice simultaneously) and not the pre's.
any guess when they will round off that edge? i don't know how many units were in the first production run, but the last thing i wanna deal with is a tiny little paper/pre cut. those are the most annoying thing in the world. well, behind Apple fanbois.
@NotSoSiniSter: i am a huge fit and finnish kind of guy. if it ain't done right the first time i am turned off. cheap materials and cheaper design are a downfall for a lot of american made products. cars, gadgets, etc.
@Nick: I picked up a pre yesterday at one of the ten launch partys. The bottom of the keyboard is sharp but nowhere sharp enough to hurt or cause any pain. Its like the edge of a desk...right angle but not dangerous
@Nick: Its super super smooth. everything about the ui is nice and clean. Its weird getting used to opening up menus but it gets intuitive after awhile. I was flowing effortlessly between 5 apps yesterday but as soon as i opened up pandora as my six thier was a slight lag, enough to notice but not enough to get mad at. The keyboard is tight but i have pretty big hands, and i maybe make an error once every three hundred words so thats positive. The pure sex factor of the phone is also great. Coverage seems about on par with my sanyo katana slightly better than my touch diamond. Camera is so so, it takes better pics in good light. Sprint were dumb asses setting up the launch i could have done better, but they arent used to people lining up for them. Web is fast and app catalog isnt very robust but they all work seamlessly and download fast. Any other questions?
Ads? Is anyone else as upset about the ads that appear in the OS as I am? I pay 60$ a year for Gold access so that I can see Subway ads? I don't think that's fair. Nor do I think they should put ads into games either.
@FalinSnake: If you are paying $60 a year they are getting you on both ends arent they? Since its only $50 to buy direct from MS, or $38 to get it from Buy.com.
Just another new shiny interface I'll get bored with a few days after I get it. Part of me wants it, but another part of me doesn't. I've gotten used to the old one, and now they want to shove this one in my face.
@tandonmiir: The cable TV comparison does not work... the TV stations get their money from the ads, you as a customer do not pay the TV stations, you just pay the cable provider. The ads in XBox Live are e.g. like if you would pay for cable (=internet provider) and lets say HBO (=XBox live) and HBO would interrupt their program for commericals all the time.
@MasterYong: Let me clarify. You won't see it in every game nor is it mandatory nor it will be out of context.
The day I'm playing GoW and right when I'm about to blow a Locust's head off it pauses for a One-A-Day ad, is the day when I'll say "Yes, in-game advertisement is annoying".
@Mr.SithNinja: But don't you think that's cool? Because everytime you start a game, you could say "Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for takeoff". Huh?... No? ... Ok nevermind.

Good sign for Palm.
It's like a good opening weekend for a movie. Hope they can keep up the momentum.

1) The closed world of Apps. That's 75% of the fun of the iPhone for me.
2) The double spacing of comments. There is nothing to be done. I'm not sure why the changed it, but I sure wish someone would fix it.
