    This works for me! Since my girlfriend left Big Red for an iPhone we've had to increase our txt packages. Now we can reduce those and use this during the day, when I have wifi on my Touch.

    Perhaps I'm missing the point of this app, but texts are sent/received typically pretty much instantly, within a few seconds give or take (yes they can be delayed, but for the most part are not), and they also pop up with a notification if I'm not actively using my phone...

    @ColonelGentleman: Yeah, but so does a data plan. And if you can only use this app with people who also have the app, chances are you'll still end up paying for a text plan for everyone who doesn't have an iPhone.
    Not discounting your point, it still seems that for the hassle of remembering which of your contacts has an iPhone with this app and those who don't and require regular texting would not only defeat the simplicity of both IM'ing and SMS, but also the money you are trying to save...

    Reminds me of Google Talk on Android, except that all Android users have it automatically set up by default without downloading an app and it can also communicate with people who use Google Talk on other devices.

    I guess most people are probably more likely to know iPhone owners than Android owners, but I'm in the unique position where 8 out of my 10 most frequently communicated with friends all have Android so it works out pretty conveniently.

    Been using twitter, with a custom prowl twitter push script running on my HTPC, for the last couple of weeks. I know not new, but man does it work well. I use it to try and not eat into texts when sending messages to my wife, and her to me as well.

    Pretty cool/simple stuff.

    I loathe i wireless. Most people from my area do. But it benefits the people who are in the more rural areas. Although I do find it odd that my area doesn't have T-Mobile, but has i wireless... hmmm.

    @tande04: And the world's first electronic digital computer (the ABC) was designed and built at the U of I. Iowa has long been a source of technological innovation, probably because all us kids who don't take up farming careers are bored out of our skulls. :P

    Desegrated schools 100 years before Brown vs Board of Education
    First woman lawyer in the US.
    One of the first states to give women the right to own property...
    The state is actually pretty big on protecting people's rights. Which is why gay marriage is now legal. Certain rights were reserved for married people, and it was... While I find the state boring in many ways, there is a lot I appreciate about people from Iowa, and the Midwest in general.

    @Lite: Thank you, sir. I've been a Midwesterner all my life. There are certain things here that can't be beaten. But I am from Illinois, although, as a Quad Cities citizen, I almost feel like I live on both sides of the River.

    UK has this ban. it's £50 on the spot fine if your seen using a phone by a police officer. Still have people who try to sneak in a phone call though. but if they crash Insurance can run a check for phone calls aroudn the time of the crash.

    @nukee: There IS already a law for that: survival of the fittest. If you're not fit to drive without texting, you die.

    This is ridiculous. I can see the authority abusing cops pulling me over under the erroneous assumption that I was texting when I was innocently trying to enjoy a game of Sudoku.

    Okay, until they make a law that says both hands have to be available for driving, these laws are just dumb. All the stuff people makes jokes about in these posts are actually things we've seen people do. So ya, spend the time and energy making sure there's a law I can't text, so I have to do it down low so a passing cop won't see, but it's still legal to eat a big mac while shaving and rolling down the highway at 75.

    @NurseDave: That was my argument too until I started seeing the results of tests like this.

    I always thought texting was no more distracting then changing CDs or messing with the temperature since this study has come out and I've seen some of the practical implications of some of tests I don't think thats the case anymore
