Sorry to be e pedant here, but one must be careful when referring to the Netherlands as "Holland." Holland is a region in the Netherlands made up of the two provinces of North and South Holland, not the country entire. So, unless you are referring to area of North and South Holland specifically, the proper reference to the country is the Netherlands.

Ok guys; these kinds of buildings will be built on lakes and rivers; not out at sea. So storms do pose a threat (but not more than it does for houseboats, possibly less because of increased stability due to size). Tsunami's and such do not happen in small lakes. Ever.

The point is, even if there was a tsunami (very very rare in Europe), that why would a floating hosue be more vulnerable than one of traditional construction? This house isn't actually floating with no anchors, and I'm confident it weighs just as much as normal house.

@BrittanyHizay: Adjustable anchors? Or no anchors at all. The point is that it goes up when the water rises, anchors would defeat that purpose.

@Hi, I'm God: I saw something on the history channel about engineering in the Netherlands that involved floating houses that raise up on giant pylons when the water level rises so that they never go anywhere.

Hey... that actually looks kinda cool. Probably fun for those that have boating as a hobby, too, with the accessible docks and all.

I wonder about its stability, though. I'd hate to get sea sickness in my own home. =/

@tvh2k: The tsunami danger depends on how deep the water is beneath you. In deep water, the majority of the tsunami is underwater. The surface shows little more than a regular wave.

@tvh2k: Sometimes I think you guys in here are just a bunch of children. Read the story. What is the idea for this building? yes, nothing to do with tsunami or hurricane. also, check out weather in holland. what do they have problems with? exactly, it's flooding their houses and not fking tsunamis.

@krom: Holland has been hit with a tsunami and is hit with on occasion with North Sea storms that equal Hurricanes in ferocity (winds and storm serge...for all intents and purposes a "hurricane")

They have problems with flooding from storm serges...just saying.

Somebody made a comment..people answered...deal with it.

@badhatharry: Yes...but if it is remotely close to land at all your point is moot. Considering that we are talking about a country that is below sea level...what do you think the chances of a tsunami being bigger? When one did hit Holland it was estimated 100K people died.

The place is cool and not a great chance of a tsunami hitting anytime soon..but as far as the tsunami side track pretty much the only place you would be safe from one is in a long ways out to sea....or a 100+ foot sea break.

@max11221: what bollocks. when was there a tsunami in holland? They have problems with floods, that's way you can see at the coasts these nice dike constructions.
There was just a massive storm in holland 4 days ago, but no hurricane/tsunami whatsoever.

also open up google map and have a look at hollands location. it's quiet protected by the UK and Norway. so i'd say, no there wont be a tsunami hitting holland.

btw. the titanic was quiet 'unsinkable'. irresponsibility made it to go under.

@krom: Umm... you just said yourself that it can happen, so obviously its a concern. Just because it has happened for a few hundred years, doesn't mean there are a few hundred years til the next one. It's luck of the draw. No one wants to play Russian Roulette with the lives of those tenants.
