I wonder if special effects like these would be more challenging if they were dealing with an actor who, unlike Brad Pitt, has more than two facial expressions?

@thePrototype: I think it's the Sam Neill factor. I love everything he's in, even Bicentennial Man.

But yeah, the special effects in that movie are just awe-inspiring.

I'm still pissed that they got the oscar for best visual effects. it's just them splicing a face onto a different body.

unlike Iron Man where they constructed a fully functional mech suit inside a computer and made it look believable, or Dark Knight where they just decided to take a city and digitally blow the hell out of it.

@victorkruger: No, the face is 100% digital. It's more than a splice. It's a recreation AND a splice.

@victorkruger: Bah, everything in Iron Man and Dark Knight had been done before (and arguably better). The oscar went to the people that were actually pushing visual effects as it should of.

@tande04: Iron Man also employs full digital facial construction, although it's never shown up close like in Benjamin Button, but it's there. And you'd never notice it unless you're told which part.

How long until porn is all CGI, with jerky storm-trooper animations and hot gungan on gungan action?

I'll say Iron Man but since I've only seen two out of the three listed I may have to change that answer once I see the last film.

Visual effects isn't just about computer-generated special effects. It encompasses the entire look and feel of a movie. If the visual effects really are good, you don't even notice them. That's why I chose Dark Knight. There are a lot of visual effects but you never think to yourself, "This isn't real."

The Dark Knight is a really good-looking movie, but I think "effects" should go to Button, even if it's not the Greatest Movie in Recorded History [via Heath Ledger].

I'm trying to remember any special effects in batman?

I guess that big prop bomb he tosses into the ocean, and I believe he gets in a fist fight wit ha shark at some point, that probably required computer graphics.

@PadreScout: The plane he gets onto next to his yacht was entirely shopped in. The Dive off a Hong Kong building was all superimposed (they couldnt actually film in HK.. duh me) and the entire sequence where the batmobile gets hit with a rocket was a 1/10 scale model track. Though the batpod was a fully built and functioning vehicle, there is a bit of CGI when it gets launched and when it 360s by running its front wheel up the side of a building. The hospital explosion? The cell phone in the guy's stomach? The guy that got dropped 3 stories and broke his legs? The Echo Location? Yeah...

See you didnt even NOTICE the special effects in batman, and to me, thats the Entire Point. Which is why I hope Dark Knight wins it.
