I can't believe Apple would release this private beta. It's slow, it crashes, I mean, they are, like, a huge company, or something, and they should, like, have stuff READY by now? Like, you know, when stuff comes out for the first time, it should, like, work with, ummmm, work like normal stuff does.
It's just like totally unacceptamable for industries to keep.... placating us like this. Like we shouldn't take it anymore and junk. We should, you know, stop buying their junk and stuff cause they should totally be ready.
@madog: are you crazy? A) This is private (aka not ready for prime-time) for a reason aka, not up to snuff. B) it is mainly supossed to be used by developers who are using the new API's for their applications, not for people who wanted to "try it out through bittorrent". C) "Like we shouldn't take it anymore and junk. We should, you know, stop buying their junk and stuff cause they should totally be ready." IT WAS PRIVATE, if you actually followed the terms of service, you shouldnt have had access in the first place. THERE WAS A REASON IT WAS PAY-FOR-ONLY. and believe me, all the dev's who paid the $99 for it are plenty happy to have access to the API's so they can write their apps (i for sure am)
Apple: It just works. Except in beta when it is a gigantic frigging mess, just like every other company.
That said, people are downgrading from the production release of Vista to XP, so the Apple-hate really only goes so far. (Ignoring that Mobile Me stuff, of course.) Still, thanks Apple for making Redmond feel a little better about itself.
@Monty: Well, I don't think Redmond would feel that much better until people are rolling back in large numbers on a final release product sold in stores.
@Monty: Also, Vista was a final product. For sale. And shipped on plenty of computers. 3.0 is in beta, and on lockdown theoretically only to developers. When Apple releases something that is as reviled as Vista, then you'll have a parallel. (Hint: the answer is MobileMe, but only in the summer of 08. It's fine now, but I suspect Vista will always be hated.)
Not that I'm saying anything about the actual everything else with the OS, but I find it funny that there's only like 3 steps for Windows yet 10 for the Mac.
@KefkaticFanatic: When you install 3.0, you have to register the device as a developmental tool When restoring it, you are changing it back to a regular old phone. That's why the 10 steps. You're not just reformatting a drive.
Yet another blow to apple. I can't say I'm surprised, though, as I've seen many unworkable betas... IE springs to mind.
But to think iPhone OS 3.0 sucks this much? Apple should've spent more time polishing it up (at least somewhere close to the quality we saw in Win7 beta) before releasing it.
@Dafrety: Don't feed the trolls! Unless you've got a really funny reply like Frigg. :)
Anyone who would describe a private, developer only beta that has bugs as a major blow to a company (Apple, Microsoft, or whoever) is clearly trolling for flames.
I just sent my letter in to my Attorney General stating Apple's lack of acceptable Beta software to the community. It always takes them months to fix, shit's always crashing. I mean, it's just totally unacceptable, man. Yeah.
@Jrsy Devil's Food Cake®: Just one week? Darn, I didn't do anything regrettable last week. Maybe I would find something regrettable to do before I go back. *Wink*
@Software_Goddess: "Just one week? Darn, I didn't do anything regrettable last week. Maybe I would find something regrettable to do before I go back. *Wink*"
Well if you already know you're going to regret it before hand then you won't need a time machine...
@Acheron's Grief: "Goddamit! those facebookers again! if they went trough the approval proccess... oh wait..."
I am likewise facing a similar-yet-opposite philosophical conflict here.
On the one hand, I obviously am on record as being in support of Facebookers not being allowed to bypass the existing approval process that everyone else is subjected to. On the other hand, if I were to actually get my way, I'd be losing half of my best material.
So I can install all these "kind of buggy" hacks (if I jailbreak my phone), or get them, fully supported and integrated, for free with the official release?
I think I'll just wait until June, which is probably what most people will do...
Was the real purpose of the App Store to have developers design cool applications, and then Apple steal all of the great ideas and call it the next version of their OS? If so, a tip of my hat to Apple for finding a way to make money from other people developing neat applications for their toys. I doubt the programmers of these applications will mind that their hard work has become a core operating system feature now.
Can somebody 'splain me how tethering can be dictated by the cell phone provider? i mean IP traffic is IP traffic. If i'm using safari on my macbook or safari on my iPhone, what's the difference??? same goes for email and any other apps that use a network connection.
is the provider going to check your packets to see what client you're using?
i can take the SIM out of my iPhone and put it in a nokia phone and tether my laptop. so what's the big deal???
@HoseHead: that's why i thought we were warned against tethering in the first place. at&t would see that you're using FAR too much data, and nuke you or something. maybe i'm just missing something, but what makes it different now?
in the article, it says at&t won't let you tether at all, so... what's it supposed to work on, t-mobile?
btw, why won't my icon change? i uploaded a new one yesterday :(
Wow! So they weren't lying when they said they they had developed it.
If I was to purchase the iPhone Developer Program for $99, will I be able to put the beta of 3.0 onto my phone?
Also, I'm assuming that there's no problems with applications that work on 2.2 working with 3.0? The AppStore and the likes work well? Everything syncs over?
*cough* can already tether *cough* with his N95 *cough* running Symbian *cough* even though it's *cough* not one of the top 5 smartphone platforms.. *COUGH*
@nutbastard (Everyone come to snowmodo!!!): *cough* you mean download!? *cough* it may not have any fart apps *cough* but it's got plenty of other useful stuff. *cough*

I was attempting to make fun of all the other jackasses who sincerely think as such in regards to this beta.
But I guess I failed in that. Thank's MATT!

Maybe you didnt get the memo.. its for developers.
Its not apple's fault that the average consumer installed it.
@Dafrety:
"Not everything is as smooth as the Win7 Beta."
huh? win7 was crashier than vista

(I'd have given you a full +1, but I took off a half 'cuz Kyonko did kinda sorta partially redeem himself with a pleasant reply to frigg.)
