Unfortunately LG's ultra-thin new sets—which boast 8ms response time, LG's TruMotion 120hz video smoothing technology and a space-saving LGS (light guide sheet) backlighting technology—appear to be, at least for now, trade show gimmicks. That means no price, no model name, no date of availability. And without seeing, in person, whether this LGS backlighting provides a comparable image to a regular CCFL backlight, it difficult to guess if we'll even see any of the new technology in production sets. But that's fine—for now, we gawk. [Tech-on]

<![CDATA[LG's Upcoming LH95 is the Thinnest LCD TV Yet]]> LG plans to take the thinnest LCD TV crown at CES 2009 with the LH95, which supports 240Hz and a 2 million to 1 contrast ratio.

So if you want THE thinnest LCD at this point in time, this 24.8mm (0.97 inch) display is it. Until, of course, the next thinnest LCD TV comes out some time in 2009, and then you'll be stuck with the second thinnest, then third thinnest, until one day you're left with little miss fatty and you're asking yourself why you spent so much money on such a heifer. Who wants that? Nobody, that's who. [AVING via GizmoWatch via Fast Company]

<![CDATA[Sony's KDL-40ZX1, a 40-inch LCD HDTV Only 9.9mm Thin]]> Sony Japan's ZX1 series 40-inch display is only 9.9mm thick at its narrowest, and 26 pounds. The display itself has only 1 HDMI port, while a wireless box can send the 120Hz, 1080p display up to 1080i images over a 5GHz channel many suspect is WHDM. That external port box will have 3 HDMI, 2 component, s-video, VGA, and even USB, mouse, and LAN port. All menus will be driven through an XMB Playstation-style crossmedia interface. <![CDATA[Pioneer 9mm-Thin Concept Plasma Ogled From All Angles]]> We just got an exclusive look at the super-thin 9mm Kuro plasma concept from Pioneer, and frankly it's hard to believe that it's real at all. It's holy-smokes thin—yes, even thinner than an iPhone. Even at the center where it balloons out to a whopping 18mm or so, it's still, you know, Kate Moss. How soon until you get one of these in your house? Not soon enough, amigo. So for now, it's just you and these sweet sweet pics. Go ahead and drool. We'll leave the room. [Pioneer CES 2008]

<![CDATA[Pioneer Bragging About its "World's Thinnest" Plasma HDTV at CES 2008]]>
Big TV wars have gone on for ages, but the Thin TV wars are just starting up. I just found out that Pioneer is making a 9mm thick HD Plasma TV which it planned to reveal at CES 2008, but was inadvertently leaked by the BBC earlier this week (story now down). Those dimensions mean the TV is thinner than a deck of cards and they're claiming "world's thinnest" although we've no idea of whether or not the Plasma will pack any of that top-line Kuro tech.

Also the weird silent film above shows that much of the set does look 9mm thick but there is a large portion which does look thicker. Although 20mm thin LCDs from Sharp and thin-border Toshiba LCDs impressed us last year, these could be the first to hit our shores. Sources close to the company confirmed the leak was real and not the result of some BBC intern dreaming up gadgets for fun and hitting "publish" by mistake. More from the show, where we'll undoubtedly see more of this set. [Thanks Tipster X]

<![CDATA[Samsung's Ultra Edition 8.4 Unveiled as World's Thinnest 3G Cellphone]]> Samsung used Paris's Louvre Museum as its own corporate theme park recently when it showed off more additions to its Ultra Edition line of 3G cellphones, specifically the Ultra Edition 8.4. In order to prove that 3G cellphones aren't destined to remain bulky and generally unattractive for the duration of the standard, Samsung's Ultra Edition 8.4—or, Z370—was designed to be the world's thinnest 3G cellphone, no doubt important to the Paris Hilton crowd out there. It's got a 1.93-inch TFT display stuck inside a body whose depth is only 0.3-inches. A 2-megapixel camera (plus a VGA camera) rounds out the cellphone's finer points.

Also introduced at Samsung's Parisian summer vacation was the Ultra Edition 13.8, or the Z720. (Samsung's taking a cue from BMW with the names of its fancier cellphones, it seems.) Supporting WAP 2.0 and boasting a 2.1-inch QVGA display, the 13.8 was introduced as the world's thinnest HDSPA slide-up, which is like saying the number one comedy in America when it's the only one in theaters. For kicks, it also sports a document viewer and a second camera for video calls.

Fingers crossed for a stateside release sometime soon!
